I want to go to shop/go to swim/go to hike 呢? 這是因為 go shopping/go swimming/go hiking 是慣用語嗎?

A:Go shopping/go swimming/go hiking 英文也有 go to shop/go to swim/go to hike 這樣的說法,只是它們沒有 go shopping/go swimming/go hiking 來得常見。此外,”go to” 意為「前往」、「前去」,其後亦經常接表示目的地、場所或地方等的名詞或名詞類用語,如 go to the beach (去海灘)、go to the concert (去聽音樂會)、go to the movies (去看電影)、go to where his daughter works (去他女兒工作的地方) 等等。

I am going to swim tonight.

I am going to the beach.

Q:”To be out is in.”

A:在這句中,out 和 in 都是形容詞。

在 1990 年代初期,out 開始被用做動詞,如 to out someone 意為告訴全世界某人 — 通常是公眾人物 — 是同性戀者,這裡的 out 就是 coming out of the closet, out of your cupboard 或 out of your house 的簡寫,也就是大家常聽到的「出櫃」的意思。 The boss has been outed.。

Quite a few British MPs have come out in parliament.

走筆至此,讀者應該知道 “To be out is in.”

Q:The pen is 0.065 meter(s) in length.

The table is 4 m in width.

The matter will be discussed at greater length this evening.

Q:The criminal possessed three guns. Three guns were possessed by the criminal.

  • Bill Gates possesses great wealth.
Great wealth is possessed by Bill Gates.
  • The cinema holds about 500.
About 500 are held by the cinema.
  • Mr. Wang usually lacks confidence.
Confidence is usually lacked by Mr. Wang.
  • The country comprises 26 provinces.
Twenty-six provinces are comprised by the country.

  • This sort of behavior hardly becomes a person in your position.
A person in your position is hardly become by this sort of behavior.
  • That color really suits her.
She is really suited by that color.
  • This dress fits me very well.
I am fitted very well by this dress.

  • The red light means “Stop”.
“Stop” is meant by the red light.
  • She resembles her sister in appearance but not in character.
Her sister is resembled by her in appearance but not in character.

  • I didn’t quite catch your last point.
Your last point wasn’t quite caught by me.
  • She took me wrong.
I was taken wrong by her.

  • I have three sons and two daughters.
Three sons and two daughters are had by me.
  • I have already had dinner.

I was cost a lot of money by the house.

  • Some misfortune must have befallen them.
They must have been befallen by some misfortune.

Band-Aid:OK繃
Chap stick:
Hi-Liter:
Kleenex:面紙

Post-it:便利貼
Q-Tip:
Rolodex:

Considering its difficulty, John did very well to pass the exam.

A:根據 The New Fowler’s Modern English Usage 一書,這類介系詞叫做「邊緣介系詞」(marginal prepositions),亦即它們具有和一般介系詞 (如 at, in, from, by 等) 相同的語法功能,但型態卻與一般介系詞大異其趣。

Being children, we are taught to be honest.

這位讀者可能把上句中的 being 看成等同於下句中的 being:Being a teacher is not an easy thing nowadays.

  • Being a mechanic himself (= Because he was a mechanic himself), he recognized the problem immediately.
  • His wife, being a patient woman (= because she is a patient woman), puts up with his temper.

Because we are children, we are taught to be honest.。

no man can serve two masters

例句:
We all know that no man can serve two masters, so you cannot work for two competing companies at the same time.

Daniel tried going to school and working, both full-time, but soon discovered that he could not serve two masters.
