Q:How happy he was invited to the party! How happy he was to be invited to the party!

  1. How + 形容詞 + a + 名詞 + S V
  2. How + 形容詞/副詞 + S V (若 V 為 BE 動詞,則 How 後面接形容詞,若為一般動詞,則接副詞)
  5. What + 複數名詞 + S V
  7. What + a(n) + 單數名詞 + S V
  8. What + a(n) + 形容詞 + 單數名詞 + S V

  • How clever a boy he is!
  • How lovely the baby is!
  • What noise they are making!
  • What a clever boy he is!
  • What wonderful ideas we have!
  • What cold weather it is!

What wonderful ideas (we have)!,What a clever boy (he is)!,What cold weather (it is)!

How clever a boy he is! He is a clever boy.,而 What cold weather it is! 的原句為 It is cold weather.;反過來說,We’ve been having terrible weather these days. What terrible weather we’ve been having these days!,而 I am happy to have such a beautiful girl friend. How happy I am to have such a beautiful girl friend!。 He was happy invited to the party.,這句的文法顯然錯誤,因為形容詞 happy 後面不能直接接過去分詞,但可以接不定詞片語,又由於 “He” 是被邀請的,須用被動態,所以這句正確的寫法是 He was happy to be invited to the party. How happy he was to be invited to the party!,其中不定詞片語 “to be invited to the party” 是解釋 “happy” 的原因。

Q: I wouldn’t go so far as to say that.

I don’t wholly/entirely/completely agree with you. 或 I am not in complete agreement with you.。

一般人比較不容易瞭解 “go so far as to + V” 這個片語的意思;它的主要意思為「竟然」、「到了… 例如:

  • They go so far as to call him a genius.
  • He went so far as to call her names.

  • More often than not his wife goes so far as to call him names.
  • Those children were calling each other names in the street.

雖然有些字典和英文用法書籍還列有「敢說」(make bold to say, venture to say) 的意思,但已不多見。 I (or We) daresay you’re right.

其實,更精確的說法是,dare 是個「半語氣助動詞」(marginal modal) — need, ought to 和 used to 也是屬於這類助動詞。

  • He dare not go out at night.
  • Daren’t you go out at night?
  • Dare you go home alone?
  • If you dare breathe a word about it to anyone, I’ll never speak to you again. (如果你敢將此事告訴任何人,我就再也不跟你講話了) (註:to breathe a word about/of it to anyone = to tell anyone about it)
  • I daren’t tell you any more, because it’s highly confidential.
  • No one dared do that again.
  • I dare not have gone to Taipei alone last year, but I think I dare now.

  • No one dares (to) speak freely about the political situation.
  • Did anyone dare to admit it?
  • They dare (to) answer these questions.
  • Do you dare (to) touch the snake?
  • They should not dare to go on strike.

  • How dare she take the exam without ever once coming to class?
  • How did she dare to take the exam without ever once coming to class?

  • I dared her to jump.
  • They dared me to spend a night in the graveyard.

的前面要用定冠詞 the,如 the second time,但我們也經常見到 a second time 這樣的用法,請問這兩者之間有何不同?

所以,the second time 是指特定的第二次,而 a second time 則是指任何的第二次。

所以,the third book 就是「第三本書」,the fourth girl 就是「第四個女孩」,依此類推。a second time 的意思則是「再一次」(即 one more time, again),「另一次」(即 another time)。 Let’s have a second shot at it. 就是「讓我們再試一下」(have a shot = have a try);I’d like a second helping, I’m still hungry!

  • Is he also a second son?
  • Yes, he is the second son of my boss.

Q:The driver of the red car was just starting the car when a black one came up very quickly.

  • Today she called me that she would go abroad to study soon.
  • We wanted to know when we would start the opening ceremony. 在以 when, while, before, after, by the time, as soon as, if 和 unless 等開頭的副詞子句或時間子句中,不能使用 would 或 was/were going to,而要用簡單過去式來表示「過去的未來式」,如同在這些子句中要使用簡單現在式來表示一般的未來式一樣。 I already told Mark that when he would arrive, we would go out for dinner. 這句是時間副詞子句,不能有 would 或 was/were going to 等字眼。

2. was/were going to + 原形動詞

  • She said she was going to see her mother next week.

3. was/were about to + 原形動詞;was/were on the point of + V-ing (通常不帶時間副詞)

  • We were about to get home, when it began to rain cats and dogs. (我們快要/正要到家的時候下起了傾盆大雨) — 注意:”was/were about to + 原形動詞” 的否定式 “was/were not about to + 原形動詞” 並非「即將不」的意思,而是「很不願意」(be very unwilling to),如 I was not about to lend you any more money.
  • I was on the point of leaving when the phone rang.

  • I told you yesterday that I was to see Mary. They were to have picked strawberries this morning, but the torrential overnight rain made the field too muddy.

5. arrive, begin, come, end, go, leave, start

  • He said the next new school year began on September 1.
  • She informed me the meeting ended next Saturday.

6. arrive, begin, come, go, leave, start, drive, fly, stay 等動詞的過去進行式可表示過去即將發生的動作 — 相對於使用現在進行式來表示不久的將來 (in the near future) 要發生的事。

  • My aunt called me that she was coming to see me.
  • He asked her if they were leaving there.

Tortuous, torturous (adjs.)

tortuous 意為「(道路、河流等) 彎彎曲曲的,蜿蜒的;(迂迴) 曲折的」(winding and twisted),如 a tortuous mountain road (蜿蜒的山路),並引伸為「錯綜複雜的;不光明正大的;拐彎抹角的」(complex, devious),如 tortuous bureaucratic procedures (複雜的官僚辦事程序);a tortuous explanation (拐彎抹角的解釋)。

Their cruel comments were torturous to her. (他們刻薄的話令她痛苦);a torturous illness (折磨人的疾病/痛苦的疾病)。

例如:woman doctor → women doctors,bus driver → bus drivers。

a woman teacher (一位女老師) → two women teachers (兩位女老師)
a man servant (一個男僕人) → two men servants (兩個男僕人)

the foreign languages department (外語系)
students reading-room (學生閱覽室)
sports meeting (運動會)
talks table (談判桌)

goods train (貨車)
customs papers (海關文件)
clothes brush (衣刷)

a five-year plan (一項 5 年計劃),a thirty-centimeter ruler (一把 30 公分的尺),a ten-foot pole (一支 10 呎長的竿子),a six-man match (一場由 6 個人進行的比賽)。

Q:How long will you be working in Taipei? 和 How long will you work in Taipei?

舉例來說,Fish live in water. How long will you work in Taipei? How long will you be working in Taipei?

從上述可知,如果你要問人家「你要在台北或某個地方工作多久」,正確的問法應該是 “How long will you be working in Taipei?”,因為 “How long will you work in Taipei?”
