I will always love you.”,另一人回答說 “And I you.”。

問題中的 And I you 其實就是 And I will always love you 的省略,因為 will always love 前面已提過,所以回答的人就不再重複了,而只說 And I you (我也會永遠愛你),因此它的文法是正確無誤的,只是這樣的說法比較老式。 但從文法觀點來看,And I you 比 Me too 合乎文法。

I will never forget you.”,而另一人回答說 “Nor I you.”。 Nor will I ever forget you 的省略了吧! 但從文法觀點來看,Nor I you 比 Me neither 或 Nor me 合乎文法。

He is taller than me. He is taller than I (am).

Q:”in front of” 和 “in the front of” 的意思有很大的不同。 There is a desk in front of the chair. (椅子的前面有張書桌);There is a desk in the front of the classroom.

1. in future:
in the future:未來,將來

  • Try to do better in future.
  • In future, make sure you go to school on time.
  • What will you do in the future?
  • We’re hoping to move to the United States in the not too distant future.

in the charge of:在…

  • The nurse is in charge of the old men.
  • The old men are in the charge of the nurse.
  • Who’s in charge of the department?

3. in case of:萬一…
in the case of:就…

  • In case of fire, ring the bell.
  • In case of any difficulties, you must consult with your aunt.
  • Many people want to be famous singers and make a lot of money, but in the case of me, it’s otherwise.

4. in hospital:

注意:美式英語也用 in the hospital 來表示 in hospital 的意思 (in university 和 in the university 也有同樣的情況)。

  • His father is in hospital.
  • “Where is John?” “He is in the hospital. He goes there to see his sick friend.” (「
  • I’m a high school student, and I go to school every day.
  • My father sometimes goes to the school to speak to the headmaster.
  • Are they in church?
  • Are they in the church?
  • He is in prison.
  • He is in the prison. He is there to see his brother.

san(d)wich
oin(t)ment
I’m going nex(t) week.
I borrowed one thousand dollars from my girl friend las(t) week.
That was the wors(t) job I ever had!
Jus(t) one person came to the party!
I can'(t) swim.

I’m a bit tired.
We have a lot to do.
Tell me what to say.
She’s slept for three hours.
I’ve finished.
I look forward to seeing you soon.

I’m going home now.,他立即糾正說,這句話不是很有禮貌,而應該說 I must get going.。

I’m going home now.

  • I’d better be making tracks.
  • I’d better get going.
  • I’d better be off in a (little) bit.
  • I’ve (got) to go (now).
  • I must get/be going.
  • I guess I should get/be going.

Q:「4 + 2 = 6」是 Four plus/and two is six 還是 Four plus/and two are six 呢?

Sixteen plus sixteen is thirty-two.,若為 and,則使用複數,如 Sixteen and sixteen are thirty-two.。 Two and two make/makes four.。 Nine and one is ten.,但 One and nine are ten.。 What is/are six and three? 或 How much is/are six and three?

Six times three are eighteen.。

(11 減 7 是 4);Three hundred and twenty divided by twenty is sixteen.

Q:It’s not that big of a deal.

The day is too hot. 或 It’s too hot a day. It’s a too hot day.;同樣地,「咖啡太甜」可以說成 The coffee is too sweet.,但不能說成 too sweet coffee (例外:只有 too much/little 才可以使用「 too + 形容詞 + 名詞」的結構,如 too much/little money)。

How hard of a job do you think it’ll be? (It’ll be) a hard job. She didn’t give too long of a talk. (She didn’t give) a long talk. 來理解 — to give a talk (on/about) 意為「發表演講;作報告」。

Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage It won’t be that long of a speech.。 A particular stroke wouldn’t be that difficult of a shot.。 I don’t want to be considered too good of a loser.。

It’s not that big of a deal. 可以 It’s not a big deal. What’s the big deal?,後者同樣在表示「那有什麼了不起」或「那又怎麼樣」(So what?)

Q:I would appreciate “it” if you would pay in cash. 和 I would appreciate if you would pay in cash.

這個動詞的主要意思有四:1.「鑑賞,欣賞,賞識」,如 appreciate good wine (欣賞好酒),wine appreciation (葡萄酒賞析);2.「瞭解,明白」(= understand, realize);3.「感激,感謝」(= be grateful or thankful for);4.「(財產、貨幣等) 增值,升值」,如 His house has appreciated considerably during the past six months. Do you appreciate our problem? I appreciate that you are disappointed by our failure to promote you.

另外,當 appreciate 意為「感激」時,亦有人反對其後直接接 how 或 that (但筆者認為應該還要再加上 if) 所引導的子句,如 Garner’s Modern American Usage 一書的作者 Bryan Garner 就是其中之一。 We appreciate how you’ve worked for the community. (我們對您為社區所做的事表示感激) 應改為 We are grateful for …。

「主詞 + would be grateful if 主詞 + would/could…」

  • I’d be most grateful if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d much appreciate it if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d be much obliged if you could/would give me an interview.

上句中的「主詞 + would be obliged if…」 I will appreciate it if …

Q:在 “A: What do you think of this movie? B: So so.” 這一對話中,What do you think…? How do you think…?

A:不可以! 因為 What do you think 是固定用語,而且改成 How do you think 後,意思就變成了「你怎麼想」,這與所要表達的意思不同。 “What do you think?” What do you think of this movie?

” 和 “How/What do you feel about someone/something?”。 How do you like your new teacher? How/What do you feel about…?,則是使用 how 或 what 都可以,意思不變,如 How/What do you feel about this idea?

Q:He will make her a good husband. 和 He will make her a good wife.

He will make her a good husband. He will make a good husband for her.。 His ruthless behavior made him many enemies.

He will make her a good wife. He will make her a doctor.
