1. A large amount of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu. 2. A large number of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu. 3. A large quantity of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu.

  • The amount of work I got through in September was double the amount that I did in August.
  • She spent a very large amount of money yesterday.

  • A small number of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu.
  • The president has made a large number of mistakes.

Quantity

  • There are very large quantities of oranges on sale in the market.
  • A vast/large quantity of imported beer has been sold.

Q:It’s a wise man that never makes mistakes.

它也不是所謂「分裂句」(cleft sentence) 的強調句型 (It is/was + 強調的部分 + that 子句)。它是一種極為特殊的「It is… that 子句」句型。

  • It is a good workman that never blunders.
  • It is a long lane that has no turning.
  • It is a good horse that never stumbles.
  • It is a good husband that never stumbles and a good wife that never grumbles.
  • It is a small flock that has not a black sheep.

  • It is a good divine that follows his own instructions.
  • It is an ill bird that fouls its own nest.
  • It is a good doctor that follows his own advice.
  • It is a silly fish that is caught twice with the same bait.
  • It is a good dog that can catch anything.

如果 C 後面接的字母是 E、I 或 Y,那麼它發 / s / 的音,如 cell, cent, center, city, decision, receive, license, distance, recently, pronounce, cycle, juicy, cylinder;若是接 E、I 和 Y 以外的其他字母,則發 / k / 的音,如 call, correct, cup, cross, class, rescue, fact, public, panic, ache。

如果 G 後面接的字母是 E、I 或 Y,那麼它發 / j / 的音,如 general, giant, gymnastic, large, energy, intelligible, changing;若是接 E、I 和 Y 以外的其他字母,則發 / g / 的音,如 golf, pig, great, gum, fragrant, grasp, glut, progress。

(junior)、”Sr.”

Melted, molten (adjs.)

(巧克力融化了);melted chocolate/butter (融化了的巧克力/奶油)。 These chocolates really melt in your mouth.

英文的「一倍半」可以直接說成 one and a half times [其後通常接 “as + many, much 或其他形容詞 (+ as)”],如 The orbit of Mars is one and a half times as big as that of Earth. 除了 one and a half times 外,亦可用 “half as + many, much 或其他形容詞 + again (+ as)” 或 “half again + as + many, much 或其他形容詞 (+ as)” 來表達相同的意思,如 My company’s exports to Asia are half as many again as (or half again as many as) those to Europe.

在 “half as + many/much + again (+ as)” 中,如果拿掉 half,使其變成 “as + many/much + again (+ as)”,那麼就會產生一個意思迄今仍模稜兩可的片語。 有些字典說 “as + many/much + again (+ as)” 是「同數量」(the same number, the same amount, the same quantity),但其他字典則說它是「多一倍」(twice as many/much),即「兩倍」(2 × 某數) 的意思。 I have six at home and as many again in the office.

I often missed my home a lot when I was abroad. When they came home, I was cooking dinner.

Mary stood under a tree when it began to rain. When Mary stood under a tree, it began to rain.,那麼這是說瑪麗站在樹下之後,雨才開始下 (她沒有淋到雨 — 如果樹葉可以遮雨的話)。 When the film ended, people walked out of the theater.

  • I was enjoying my dinner when my wife came home.
= While I was enjoying my dinner, my wife came home.

  • While I was studying in one room of our dormitory, my roommate was having a party in the other room.
= I was studying in one room of our dormitory while my roommate was having a party in the other room.
