First two/two first, last three/three last

在「限定詞的位置」 一文中,筆者談到基數、序數以及 last, next, much, many 等等都屬於後置限定詞,而且它們可以同時出現,如 the first two houses (最前面的兩間房子),the last three chapters (最後三章)。由此可知,first 和 last 是放在基數之前,亦即 first/last + 基數 + 名詞。

然而,two first, three last (first 和 last 放在基數之後,亦即基數 + first/last + 名詞) 亦是英文的習慣用語,而且它們的意思與 first two, last three 完全一樣。 再者,the last three chapters (最後三章),但 the three last chapters (三個最後一章) – 問題是,任何一本書都只有一章是最後一章,這似乎不通。

儘管如此,這項邏輯仍敵不過語言的習慣用法,two first 就等於 first two,而 three last 就等於 last three,「阿無你是要怎樣?!」

accept, admit, announce, answer, ask, assume. authorize, believe, claim, command, complain, consent, consider, contest, declare, decide, decree, demand, demonstrate, determine, deny, desire, dictate, direct, discover, discuss, doubt, examine, expect, feel, find (out), forget, grant, guarantee, hope, ignore, imply, indicate, insist, know, move, notice, observe, order, overlook, permit, propose, prove, recommend, regret, remark, report, request, require, say, see, show, specify, suggest, suppose, think, understand, urge, wonder 等等。例如:

We have to admit that he’s a highly competent man.
They decided that John must stay there.
I regret that you see it like that.

然而,有些動詞卻不可以接 that 子句當受詞,如 contribute, describe, make, prevent, speak, summarize 等等。

He spoke to his girlfriend that he had missed her very much.

Tolerance, tolerant

Tolerance 後面可以接 for, of, to, towards 等介系詞 (若是接 to,則 tolerance 意為「忍受能力,耐久力」),但 tolerant 只能接介系詞 of。例如:

Her tolerance of his grouchiness is impressive.
He has no tolerance for criticism.
It is a country with a reputation for tolerance towards religious minorities.
Many old people have a very limited tolerance to cold.
She has little tolerance to sunlight.
She is tolerant of his foibles.

He is intolerant of any opposition.

Newton’s laws (牛頓定律)
Ohm’s law (歐姆定律)
Euler’s equation (歐拉方程式)

the Jurassic era (侏儸紀時代)
lithium (鋰)
carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)

One of the legs of the table is broken. (這張桌子的一隻腳斷了),句中one of the legs 和 the legs of the table 都是所有格關係,即名詞1 屬於名詞2。

He gave a lecture on the use of solar energy.
We waited for the arrival of the next bus.

然而,名詞1 + of + 名詞2 還可表示同位格關係,此時 of 意為「就是;等於」(that is; being);以 the City of New York (紐約市) 為例,New York 就是 city,而這個 city 就是 New York。其他例子還有 at the age of ten (10 歲時),the art of painting (繪畫藝術),the problem of unemployment (失業問題),a price increase of 20 percent (百分之二十的價格上漲),some fool of a boy (= some foolish boy,某位蠢男孩) 等等。

在 “I met all my many friends.”

  1.  前置限定詞:all (of), both (of), half (of);double, twice, three times 等;a third (of), three quarters (of) 等;what, such 等;only。
  2. 中間限定詞:the, a(n);this, that these, those;my, your, Bill’s 等;some, any, no, every, each, either, enough, much;what(ever), which(ever), whose。
  3. 後置限定詞:one, two, three 等;first, second, third 等;next, last, other, several 等;much, many, few(er), little/less, more。

必須注意的是,前置限定詞不可同時出現,如 “all his salary” 是正確的,但 “all half his salary” 則錯誤。

中間限定詞主要包括冠詞 the, a(n)、所有格 my, your, Bill’s… 以及 some, any…

後置限定詞則包括基數、序數以及 last, next, much, many 等等。

綜合以上的敘述,限定詞的順序可以寫成:”all these problems”、”four times this amount”、”twice that size”、”one-third my salary”、”his fourth birthday”、”Mary’s third husband”、”these three boys”、”our several achievements”、”the few friends that I have”、”my first three days off”、”our next two projects”、”several/many other people”、”all my other books”、”such a waste”、”She has become only the third woman to be nominated for the best director at the Oscars.” 等等。

但此一順序也有若干例外:”many a child” (= many children)、”his every move”、”an only child” (獨生子) 等。

The Prime Minister’s address is No. 10 Downing St.
The President lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, DC (總統住在華盛頓特區賓夕凡尼亞大道1600號 – 美國白宮地址)
I live at 2000 Taipei St.

I live on Taipei Street, (Number) 2000.

Cut…in half, in thirds, in quarters, etc.

Both halves of the game were played in poor weather. 然而,在表達把東西切成、鋸成或劈成兩半或兩等分時,英文是寫成 cut…in half (如 She cut the apple in half. — 她把蘋果切成兩等分), saw…in half, split…into half,而不是 cut…in halves, saw…in halves, split…into halves。 She cut the apple in thirds/quarters.。雖然 cut…in half 中的 half 必須用單數,但我們可以將此片語改為 cut…in two (halves)。

Included, including 和 inclusive (of)

All of us, me included, are teachers.

All of us are teachers, including me. (包括我在內,我們都是老師/我們都是老師,其中包括我在內);I’m ordering some extra office equipment, including a new printer.

The rent is NTD 6,000 inclusive. All of us are teachers, including me. = All of us are teachers, inclusive of me.

Included, including 和 inclusive (of) 的相反詞分別為 excluded, excluding 和 exclusive (of),用法相同,只是意思變成相反的「除…

All on the plane were lost, including the crew.
= All on the plane were lost, the crew included.
= All on the plane were lost, inclusive of the crew.
= Including the crew, all on the plane were lost.

The hotel charges $5,000 a day, excluding meals.
= The hotel charges $5,000 a day, meals excluded.
= The hotel charges $5,000 a day, exclusive of meals.

All of us, me included, were invited.
= All of us, including me, were invited.
= They invited all of us, inclusive of me.

The rent is $10,000 inclusive.
= The rent is $10,000 inclusive of everything.

Doubt

I have my doubts about his plan. There is no doubt in my mind that he is telling the truth. 或 I don’t doubt (= I am certain) that he is telling the truth. I doubt whether/if he is telling the truth.

To give somebody the benefit of the doubt:
To give something the benefit of the doubt:
