I know a girl who was infected by HIV recently. I know a girl infected by HIV recently.。 I know a girl who is sick. I know a girl sick.

He is the man whom/ that I saw yesterday.

  • The train now arriving (= which is now arriving) at platform 1 is the 6:36 from Taipei.
  • Food sold (= which is sold) in this supermarket is of the highest quality.

Anyone touching (= who touches) these priceless exhibits will be escorted out of the museum. The girl who fell down the cliff broke her leg. The girl falling down cliff….,其中的道理請看下面的說明。

The girl falling down the cliff broke her leg. The girl who was falling down the cliff broke her leg.,這意思是說「正在墜落懸崖的少女摔斷了腿」,顯然地意思不通;若先行詞為泛指,則省略後的現在分詞只是普通動詞改為現在分詞而已。

  • The boy driving (= who was driving) the BMW was underage, unlicensed and over the limit.
  • The police impounded all the vehicles belonging to (= which belonged to) his brother.

There is a man below who wants to see you. There is a man below wants to see you.。

Hardback (n.), hardcover, paperback, softback, softcover (adjs., nn.), hardbacked, paperbacked (adjs.)

所以,「精裝書」可以有下列幾種寫法或講法:a hardback, a hardcover, a hardbacked book 或 a hardcover book。

所以,「平裝書」可以有下列幾種寫法或講法:a paperback, a softback, a softcover, a paperback book, a paperbacked book, a softback book 或 a softcover book。

Q:下面那一種寫法才正確還是兩者都可以:two and one-half inches 或 two-and-one-half inches?

A:根據 Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) 這本著名修辭書籍裡所寫的 “four and one-eight inches”,我們應該寫成 “two and one-half inches”。

He’s a bad manager. There’s no reason, though, to dismiss him. (他是個差勁的經理,但沒有理由因此將他免職);It’s hard work; I enjoy it though.

此外,在 as though (= as if:好像,彷彿) 和 even though (= though:雖然,儘管) 等連接詞中,我們也只能用 though,不可使用 although。

Effective, effectual, efficacious, efficient (adjs.)

The talks were very effective in settling the dispute. (這些會談在解決糾紛上卓有成效);an effective treatment for hair loss (治療脫髮的一種有效方法);The law is effective as from today. (這項法律今天開始生效);an effective performance/performer (令人印象深刻的表演/表演者);an effective speech/speaker (有力的演說/演說者);He has become an effective leader (他已成為實質領導人);Only half our troops are trained and effective.

All plans to reduce the trade deficit have not so far proved effectual. (截至目前,所有降低貿易赤字的計畫均證明無效);effectual measures to combat unemployment (對付失業的有效措施)。

(有效率的機器/制度);an efficient secretary (有效率或稱職的秘書)。它的反義詞 inefficient 和名詞 efficiency 都相當常用,尤其是名詞:an inefficient cook (不稱職的廚師);It would improve our efficiency if we used more up-to-date methods.

I purchased two dozens of pencils.

Complaints came the next morning by the dozens. (翌晨有很多人投訴);Dozens of people came to see me. (許多人來看我);I have been to dozens of countries.

Send me three dozen eggs. (給我送3打蛋);I paid eight dozen dollars for that pen. I purchased two dozens of pencils. I purchased two dozen of pencils.

然而,當 of 後面的受詞為代名詞或特指的名詞時 (所謂特指的名詞,就是名詞的前面加上 the, that, this, these, those 或所有格,如 my, John’s 等等。

  • Three dozen of them went to the U.S.
  • Two dozen of these cups were broken.
  • Eight dozen of his troops were killed.
  • More than one dozen of those apples have taken away.

施洗禮),organize/organise (組織;籌辦),realize/realise (瞭解;意識到),recognize/recognise (認出;承認;認可) 等等。

有些人反對現代創造新動詞的趨勢,即在名詞或形容詞後面加上 -ize/-ise,如 pedestrianize/pedestrianise (使成為行人專用道;步行),hospitalize/hospitalise (使…住院治療),prioritize/prioritise (按優先順序處理),finalize/finalise (敲定,完成) 等等。 然而,對於既沒有較簡易型態又沒有同義詞的 -ize/-ise 動詞 (及其衍生字) 來說,它們的作用可就大矣,如 to computerize the stock control system (使庫存控制系統電腦化);the decimalization of British currency (英國貨幣改為十進制)。

My entire family now worships in the church (where or which) my great grandfather used to be a minister.

My entire family now worships in the church (where or which) my great grandfather used to be a minister. (現在我們全家正在我曾祖父過去擔任牧師的教堂做禮拜) 這句應該使用 where 這個關係副詞,在此 where 修飾動詞 used to be,但 where 所引導的整個關係子句 (where my great grandfather used to be a minister) 則是修飾 church。

My favorite month is always February, when we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Do you know the reason why Mary isn’t in class today?

Do you know the reason (that) Mary isn’t in class today?;I know the reason (that) men like motorcycles. I know the reason, why men like motorcycles.

  • This is the mountain village where I stayed last year.
  • This is the mountain village where I visited last year.
  • This is the mountain village (which) I visited last year.
  • I’ll never forget the days when I worked together with you.
  • I’ll never forget the days when I spent in the countryside.
  • I’ll never forget the days (which) I spent in the countryside.

上面的句子 “My favorite month is always February, when we celebrate Valentines’ Day.”

  • This is the museum which the exhibition was held. (誤 — 這句的先行詞 museum 在關係子句中不是當主詞或受詞,而是當副詞用,即 in the museum:The exhibition was held in the museum.)
  • This is the museum where the exhibition was held. (正)
  • This is the museum in which the exhibition was held. (正 — 因為 in the museum 的關係,在此 where = in which)

Exceptionable, exceptional, unexceptionable, unexceptional (adjs.)

I took the greatest exception to his rude remarks. That play is quite suitable for children to see; there’s nothing exceptionable in it.

(他們是優秀的學生);The firemen showed exceptional bravery.

A judge’s ethical standards should be unexceptionable. (法官的道德標準應是無懈可擊的);unexceptionable behavior (無可非議的行為)。 The hotel was comfortable but unexceptional. (這家旅館雖舒適但很普通);Unfortunately some judges’ ethical standards have been unexceptional.
