Continual, continuous (adjs.), continuance, continuation, continuity (nn.)

He still smokes despite the continual warnings of his doctor. (儘管他的醫生多次警告,他還是抽菸);Continual rain ruined the crops. (連續陰雨毀壞了農作物);continual demands for improved working conditions (多次爭取改善工作條件的要求);continual hammering (一下又一下的敲打)。

The brain needs a continuous supply of blood. (大腦需要不斷的血液供給);The trees formed a continuous line on the horizon. (樹木在地平線上連成綿延不斷的線條);a continuous flow of water (汨汨流水);a continuous hum from the air conditioner (空調持續不斷的嗡嗡聲);continuous hammering (連續不斷的敲打);a continuous roll of paper (連在一起的一捲紙)。所以,「不斷的干擾/騷擾」是 continual interruptions/harassment,不是 continuous interruptions/harassment。

I’m tired of the way he continually complains about everything. (我對他老是凡事抱怨感到厭煩);Our database is being continually updated. (我們的資料庫一直在更新);The plane landed after flying continuously for 16 hours. (飛機在連續飛行 16 小時後著陸);It rained continuously for three days.

The continuance of this drought will ruin the harvest. (旱災持續下去會把莊稼毀掉);his continuance in office (他的繼續留任)。 We look forward to a continuation of the talks next week. (我們都盼望下週能繼續會談);Continuation of my work was difficult after I had been ill for six months. 儘管語意有所差異,但在一些上下文中,continuance 和 continuation 是可以互換的,如 the continuance/continuation of the strike (罷工的持續)。 The road is a continuation of the M6 motorway. (這條路是 M6 高速公路的延伸);His second novel is a continuation of the first.

The school was like a second family, providing continuity and stability. (學校就像第二個家庭,提供延續性和穩定性);There’s no continuity between the parts of his book. The continuity girl is responsible for making sure that the actor wears the same hat in both scenes.

Doubtless (adv., adj.), doubtlessly, indubitably, no doubt, undoubtedly, unquestionably, without doubt (advs.)

It will doubtless rain on the day of the welcome party. No doubt she will be at the party tonight. (她今晚很可能會參加聚會);No doubt he is very clever but I still can’t understand what he is saying.

undoubtedly 和 without doubt (或 without a doubt) 的肯定性比 doubtless 和 no doubt 高出許多:She is without doubt the most popular singer. (無疑地,她是最受歡迎的歌手);There will undoubtedly (= certainly) be troubles with the unions if he is dismissed. He is indubitably/unquestionably the best tennis player in the country.

Definite, definitive (adjs.), definitely, definitively (advs.)

There’s a definite link between smoking and some types of cancer. (抽菸和某些種類的癌症肯定有關連);We demand a definite answer. (我們要求一個明確的答覆);We haven’t arranged a definite date for our visit yet. (我們尚未安排一個確切的訪問日期);definite article (定冠詞)。 Mary was very definite about (= very clear about) her intention to travel the world.

The Supreme Court made a definitive decision. (最高法院作出了最後的判決);After some thought, he gave us a definitive answer. 此外,definitive 還意為「最完整可靠的;最好的;權威的」(the most nearly complete, better than all others, authoritative),通常用來形容作品或表演,如 She’s written the definitive biography (or definitive life) of Abraham Lincoln. This little book is the definitive travel guide to Taiwan.

definitely 意為「肯定地;當然;明確地」,如 He is definitely coming. (他一定會來);I cannot say definitely until I see John. The Supreme Court’s decision solved the problems definitively.

Consequent, consequential (adj.)

Competition in the market has led to goods being produced cheaply and a consequent deterioration in quality. (市場的競爭已導致商品的廉價生產,隨之品質也下降了);She was knocked down by a truck and her consequent injuries left her a permanent invalid. (她被卡車撞倒,而因此造成的傷害使她終生殘廢);consequential loss/damage (間接損失/損害)。

The rise in price was consequent on/to the failure of the crops. (物價上漲是由收成不好所引起的);Severe flooding was consequent on/to the heavy rains. They’ve increased the number of staff and consequently the service is better.

Consequential 除了上述意思外,也意為「重要的,意義重大的」(important, significant),可以指事物也可指人,其反義詞為 inconsequential,意為「不重要的;無足輕重的;微不足道的」(unimportant, insignificant):He made a consequential decision. (他作了一項意義重大的決定);an inconsequential event (無關緊要的事件);an inconsequential detail (微不足道的細節)。 He is a consequential little man.

Contemptible, contemptuous (adjs.)

contemptible 意為「可鄙的,卑劣的,卑鄙的」(despicable):That was a contemptible trick to play on a friend! (那是一種欺騙朋友的卑劣手段!);a contemptible liar (卑鄙的說謊者)。

Contemptuous 意為「表示輕蔑的;輕蔑的,輕視的,瞧不起的,鄙視的,藐視的」(scornful, full of contempt):He gave a contemptuous laugh. He has always been openly contemptuous of all authority. (他向來公然蔑視一切權威);The official was often contemptuous of public opinion. They glanced contemptuously at the other guests. (他們輕蔑地掃視著其他客人);She tossed her head contemptuously.

Respectable, respectful, respective (adjs.)

Professor Chuang is a respectable scholar. (莊教授是一位值得尊敬的學者);In those days acting was not considered a respectable profession. (當時演戲並不是受人尊敬的行業);It’s not respectable to be drunk in the street.

The crowd stood in respectful silence as the funeral procession went by. (當送葬隊伍經過時,人群沈默地肅立著);He’s always respectful to older people.

We all then left for our respective homes. The workers explained their respective problems to the shop steward. Toys and furniture are sold on the second and third floors respectively. John and Mary got into their (respective) cars and drove away. (約翰和瑪麗坐上他們的車子後便駕車離開了);Each book must be returned to its (respective) shelf. (每本書均須歸回書架);She worked (respectively) in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung.

Lighted, lit

美式英語通常使用 lighted:She lighted a candle and turned off the lamp. (他點亮蠟燭後關掉油燈);The explosion occurred immediately after he had lighted a cigarette. 英式英語則使用 lit:He lit the fire at 7 p.m. last night. (他昨晚七時點燃爐火);He had lit his pipe before he noticed the no-smoking sign.

Q:在 He needs must come.

A:needs 這個字本身的拼法就是 N-E-E-D-S,是個副詞,但僅跟 must 連用,構成 must needs 和 needs must,不過這兩者的意思並非完全相同。

  • I must needs go there now.
  • She must needs go away when I want her.
  • The telephone must needs ring when I went to bed.

英文中有句成語就是使用 needs must,那就是 “Needs must when the devil drives.”,意為「人在屋簷下不得不低頭;情勢所逼,不得不然」。

Important (adj.), importantly (adv.), more/most important (adj.), more/most importantly (adv.)

Important 這個形容詞與介系詞連用時,通常接for, in 或 to:Winning the game yesterday was important for the team’s morale. (贏得昨天那場比賽對鼓舞全隊的士氣至關重要);Information and support are important in helping people deal with swine flu. (資訊和支援對幫助人們對抗豬流感是很重要的);Your interest and support are important to your child.

It is important to learn to communicate. (學會溝通很重要);It’s important that he (should) learn to read. (他學會閱讀是很重要的) — 「It + be 動詞 + essential, important, necessary, vital 等形容詞 + that + S (should) V…」 It is important that he be sent there at once. She was the most important of all the contestants.

無論是形容詞 more/most important 還是副詞 more/most importantly 都可當句子副詞 (sentence adverb),且都是標準用法:More [Most] important [importantly], we now have the right answer.

Presently

這個副詞意為「很快;不久」(shortly, soon) 或「目前;現在」(now, at present, at the present time, currently)。

He’ll be with you presently. He’s presently at work on a new novel.
