He complained about my going to Canada. He complained about me going to Canada.,此時 “going to Canada” 這個片語是當受詞 “me” 的補語。 Our teacher complained about Mary’s coming to class late. Our teacher complained about Mary coming to class late.。

Q:在 The dishes in the sink need washing/need to be washed as soon as possible. 這句中,need washing 和 need to be washed 的意思有何不同?
Your shoes need cleaning/need to be cleaned.
- The house needs painting/needs to be painted.
- The baby’s diaper is wet. It needs changing/needs to be changed.
- The dishes in the sink need washing/need to be washed as soon as possible.
- They deserved punishing/deserved to be punished.
- The roof requires repairing/requires to be repaired.
- Your coat wants washing/wants to be washed.
Being children, we are taught to be honest.
這位讀者可能把上句中的 being 看成等同於下句中的 being:Being a teacher is not an easy thing nowadays.
- Being a mechanic himself (= Because he was a mechanic himself), he recognized the problem immediately.
- His wife, being a patient woman (= because she is a patient woman), puts up with his temper.
Because we are children, we are taught to be honest.。
Q:What do you say to going to a movie with me tonight?
我想這位讀者想要問的問題應該是 “What do you say to…” 它的意思與 “How about…”
- What do you say to going out for lunch?
= How about going out for lunch?
Q:有人說 She should wait until she is sure to know his character before she marries him. 這句中的 sure to know 應改為 sure of knowing 才對,但字典上明明說這兩種用法都可以?
A:誠然,sure to know 的確應改為 sure of knowing,請看下面的分析就知道其中的原因。
- be sure + that/wh- 子句 — 意為「確信…」,「對…
- be sure of /about + 動名詞 — 意爲「確信…」,「對…
- be sure to do — 意為「一定會,必定會」
- We are sure/certain of winning.
- I am sure/certain that he will come.
- He is sure of winning.
- He is sure to win.
- It’s sure/certain to rain.
- It’s sure/certain of raining.
- It is certain (not sure) that he’ll come tomorrow. It = that he’ll come tomorrow。
She should wait until she is sure of knowing his character before she marries him.
(1) Rather than cause trouble, he left. (他不願惹麻煩,寧可離去);(2) She made students think for themselves, rather than telling them what to think. (她讓學生獨立思考,而不是告訴他們怎麼思考);(3) The job will take months rather than weeks.
A:當 rather than (= but not,意為「而不是;不是 … He ran rather than walked. (他不是在走而是在跑),You are doing this for yourself rather than for others. The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style Rather than staying home on a Saturday night, we went out to six different bars.
- I decided to stay at home rather than (to) go/going to the cinema.
Rather than causing trouble, he left.,而上面提到的 Oxford Dictionary 中的句子也可寫成 Rather than stay home on a Saturday night, we went out to six different bars.
- Rather than criticize/criticizing your husband, why not find out if there’s something wrong?
- The teacher rather than the students is to blame.
Q:I don’t want there to be any misunderstanding.
I don’t want there to be any doubt about this.
I have dreamed of there being such a beautiful girlfriend.
Big up (v.)
這個片語動詞意為「盛讚,吹捧;致敬,致意;感激,感謝」,如 to big somebody or something up (讚美某人或某事);to big up those who give me support (感謝支持我的人;向支持我的人致意);to big up to my advisor (向我的指導教授致敬)。它也可用作名詞,如 a big-up to all my colleagues (感謝我的所有同事;向我的所有同事致意)。
在巴哈馬群島 (the Bahamas) 的俚語中,to big up 意為「越來越大」(to get bigger),指孕婦的肚子越來越大。
He bigged up his fellow artists.
Salary increment, bonus, COLA, raise, rise (nn.) / raise, rise (vv.) / raise, bring up, rear (vv.) / rise, arise, get up (vv.)
中文的「加薪」,英文可以叫做 salary increment, pay increase, pay rise, pay raise, rise in pay, raise in pay, rise in salary, raise in salary, rise, raise 等等,其中 rise 及其所構成的用語是英式英語,而 raise 及其所構成的用語是美式英語,如 She gave her employees large rises/raises last year.
cost-of-living 是形容詞,生活費的名詞是 the cost of living。
The sun has not yet risen. (太陽還沒升起);Prices have risen again this month. They are going to raise funds for the school buildings.
He rose [arose, got up] to object. She has a habit of rising [arising, getting up] early.
Means
His means are more than adequate. 這意思的 means 有幾個常用的片語或成語:have the means to do something (有錢做某事),如 Small businesses don’t have the means to develop a sophisticated Internet presence. He is living beyond his means. (他入不敷出);according to one’s means (根據某人的財力),如 You are invited to contribute according to your means. (請依您的財力捐款);a man/woman of means (富有的男子/女子),如 He had the well-dressed appearance of a man of means.
The best means of securing the cooperation of the builders is to appeal to their self-interest. (確保建商合作的最好方法是迎合他們自身的利益);The most effective means for dealing with the drug problem have generally been those suggested by the affected communities.
意為「方法;手段」時,means 最常接 of,但接 for, to, toward 的情況亦不時會見到,而這些介系詞後面再接名詞或動名詞:a means of noise reduction (降低噪音的方法),a means for transmitting signals (傳送信號的方法),a means to an end (達到目的的方法),a means toward achieving social equality (獲致社會平等的手段)。
這意思的 means 有幾個常用的片語或成語,其中之一就是 a means to an end (= a way to an end),如 I gave him a bicycle as a means to an end: I want him to take more exercise. 其他常用片語或成語還有:by means of (使用,應用;藉由),We express our thoughts by means of words. (我們用言詞來表達思想);by no means/not by any means (= not at all) (絕不,一點都不),如 It is by no means certain. (一點都不確定);by all means (= certainly; please do) (當然可以;好的),如 “Do you mind if I invite a few friends?” “By all means.”
