Doubting Thomas

  • Kevin’s a real doubting Thomas – he simply wouldn’t believe I’d won the car until he saw it with his own eyes.
  • Helen kept trying, hoping to prove all those doubting Thomases wrong.

Hit the hay, hit the sack

美國作家喬治‧艾德 (George Ade) 1902 年在其《People You Know》一書中就寫過 “He crawled into the hay at 9.30 P.M.” 雖然 to hit the hay 至少在 1900 年代初期就已存在,但 to hit the sack 直到大約 1940 年才出現。

例句:

  • Time to go home and hit the hay!
  • I have to go home and hit the hay pretty soon.
  • Let’s hit the sack. We have to get an early start in the morning.
  • I’ve got a busy day tomorrow, so I think it’s time to hit the sack.

Off of

A [= I] fall off of a tree.

Another think coming

Think 是大家所熟悉且每天使用的動詞,但它亦可當名詞用,意為「想」,不過只用在兩個慣用的口語中,一是 to have a think (about something),另一是 to have (got) another think coming。To have a think (about something) I want to have a think about the engagement. (我想仔細考慮訂婚的事);I’ll have to have a think about this before I give you a definite answer.

To have (got) another think coming 根據《牛津英語大辭典》(The Oxford English Dictionary, OED),這成語僅跟 “If you think/he thinks (that) …

Fire in the hole

Fire in the hole I heard someone yelling, “Fire in the hole! Fire in the hole!” followed by a loud noise. 有人將它誤為 fire in the hold,可能是 hole 跟 hold 的發音相近的關係。

Fire in the hole

此外,fire in the hole 有時亦被當俚語用,意為「小心,當心,注意」(watch out),如 Fire in the hole! There is danger ahead.

Hit pay dirt

To hit pay dirt 意為「發橫財;發現有價值的東西」,有時也使用 to strike pay dirt 來表示。

  • She finally hit pay dirt with her third novel which quickly became a best seller.
  • McDonald’s hit sales pay dirt in 2015 thanks to cheap gas, good weather, and the introduction of an all-day breakfast menu. (The Christian Science Monitor)
  • If a salesperson does not quickly strike paydirt with a customer, they will usually move straight on to someone else.

grin and bear it

例句:

  • I really don’t want to spend the whole weekend working but I guess I’ll just have to grin and bear it.
  • Bad things keep happening and you just have to learn to grin and bear it.

The proof is in the pudding

“The proof is in the pudding” 以及更短的 “the proof of the pudding” 都是英文古諺 “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” 的簡寫。

根據《牛津英語大辭典》(The Oxford English Dictionary, OED),the proof of the pudding is in the eating 可追溯到 14 世紀初,而它首次出現在印刷品是在 1605 年。或許是這個成語太長、不容易記憶,現今所見到的大多是 the proof of the pudding 和 the proof is in the pudding 的寫法,尤其後者更具優勢,這可能是 the proof is in the pudding 比 the proof of the pudding 還要有意義一些。

Lay of the land, lie of the land

關於 lay 和 lie 的動詞用法,在「The dog lay at its owner’s feet.」

本文標題中的 lay 和 lie 就是這兩個字的名詞用法,進一步言,the lay of the land 和 the lie of the land 為同義成語。
