Sensual, sensuous (adjs.)

這兩個形容詞指的都是關於感官的快樂和感官上的享受,但兩者的意義卻南轅北轍,必須加以區別。sensual 意為「肉體上;肉慾的;性感的」,可以指人或事物。若指人,通常指一個人貪圖口腹之樂或耽於淫樂,如貪杯和貪食以滿足口腹之慾或貪戀床第之事以滿足性慾;若指事物,則指該事物會引起性慾或予人這樣的感受。是故,sensual 的含意大多是不好的、負面的,如 purely sensual pleasures (純粹肉體上的快樂);He is always indulging in the sensual pleasures of eating and drinking. (他老是耽溺於吃喝的口腹之樂);He led a sensual life. (他沈迷酒色);sensual curves/lips (性感的曲線/嘴唇);Catherine is a sensual anchorwoman. (凱薩琳是個性感的女主播)。

Sensuous 意為「使人得到感官上享受的;予人美感的;舒服的」,只能指事物,用來形容予人感官上享受的事物。是故,這個字的含意都是好的、正面的,如 sensuous music/poetry (悅耳的音樂/動人心弦的詩歌);the sensuous feeling of soft velvet on the skin (柔軟的天鵝絨給皮膚帶來舒服的感受);She uses beautiful sensuous lines in her drawings.

Q:She saved what little she could from her meager income to help poor children. 這句的意思為何? 又句中的 what little 作何解釋?

A:這句的意思是「她把從她微薄的收入中所能省下來的一點點錢都用來幫助貧童」。至於句中的 what little 作何解釋,實非三言兩語就能說清楚,請看下面的解說。一般而言,what 有下列常見的用法:

A. 形容詞用法: B. 代名詞用法
  1. 疑問形容詞 —
    意為「什麼」。

例句:What book did you buy? (你買了什麼書?)

  2. 關係形容詞
    (that…which, those… which, all…that, any…that) —
    意為「所…的」、「任何…的」、「所有…的」。

例句:I gave what (few) books I had. (我把我僅有的書都給了他)

  3. 感嘆用法 —
    意為「多麼;真是;何等」。

例句:What beautiful weather! (多麼好的天氣!);What a fool that man is!
    (那個人真傻!)

  1. 疑問代名詞 —
    意為「什麼」。

    例句:What is the price? (這價錢是多少?)

  2. 關係代名詞 (the
thing or things that, that which, those which, all that, any
    that) — 意為「所…的人或事物」、「任何人或事物」、「所有人或事物」。

例句:I believed what he told me. (我相信他對我所說的)

至於 what little 中的 what,就是上述關係形容詞的用法 — 有些字典和外國文法書稱這 what 為「前置限定詞」(predeterminer)。這可謂 what 的一種特殊用法或句型,因為 what 後面的名詞一定是不可數名詞或複數可數名詞,所以如果上述關係形容詞的例句寫成 I gave what book I had.,那就錯了 (book 須為複數);再舉一例:What people (複數可數名詞) I met there were very friendly to me. = All the people that I met there were very friendly to me. (我在那兒所碰到的人都對我非常友好)。此外,這 what 除了「任何…的」、「所有…的」意思外,還有一個特殊的意思,那就是「盡可能的」(as much…as),如 I will give you what help (不可數名詞) I can. = I will give you as much help as I can. (我會盡力幫助你)。

what 在這種用法中經常和 few 或 little 連用,然後再修飾名詞,意為「全部的…儘管不多」「雖少但全部」或「所僅有的…」。這就是 I gave what books I had. 被譯為「我把我僅有的書都給了他」(換言之,它的意思是說「我的書全部都給了他,儘管這些書為數不多」) 的依據 。由於 what 和 few 或 little 經常連用,有些字典就把它們列為慣用語。在問題的句子中,what little 是 what little money 的省略,而這又等於 all the little money that,所以該句可以改寫為 She saved all the little money that she could from her meager income to help poor children.。再舉一例: We did what little we could to help the refugees. (我們盡了自己僅有的一點力量去幫助那些難民)。

what few 或 what little 中的 few 或 little 有時可省略,如上述關係形容詞的例句 I gave what (few) books I had.,又如 I contributed what (little) money (= all the little money that I had) towards the fund. (我把僅有的一點錢都捐給了那個基金)。再者, what little 之後往往不加名詞,本身就作代名詞用,在自己所引導的子句中作主詞或受詞,意思不變,如 I told him what little I knew on the subject. (我把我對這主題僅知道的一點都告訴了他) — 上面的例句和問題中的句子也說明了這一點。

事實上,what 在作關係代名詞時,它所引導的名詞子句,有時也有上述的含意,如 I gave him what I had. (我把我所有的都給了他);He deposits what he saves in a bank. (他把他所省下來的錢都存入銀行)。

Q:代名詞 one, it 和 that 之間有何不同?

A:one 是泛指,而 it 和 that 是特指。it 與所指的名詞是同一個,而 that 與所指的名詞是同類,但不是同一個。請看下面的例句與說明:

I can’t find my pen. I think I should buy one. (one 是泛指,即不特定指哪一類或哪一支筆) (我找不到我的筆。我想我該去買一支。)

I can’t find my pen. I don’t know where I put it. (it 是特指,指的是同一支筆) (我找不到我的筆。我不知道我把它放在哪裡。)

The pen you bought is cheaper than that I bought. (that 是特指,指的是同類的筆,但不是同一支) (你買的那支筆比我買的便宜。)

Allusive, elusive, illusive, illusory (adjs.)

在這幾個字當中,前三個字的發音非常相似,因為它們唯一不同的地方 — 第一音節 — 都是弱讀,其中 elusive 和 illusive 的發音更是完全相同。allusive 意為「間接提及的,暗示的,暗指的;引經據典的,有典故的,引喻的」(characterized by implied or indirect references),如 a remark allusive to his misconduct (暗指他行為不檢的談話);allusive English idioms (有典故的英文成語)。elusive 意為「逃避的,規避的;難抓住的;難找的;難記的」(evasive, hard to grasp or catch, baffling),如 We found him rather elusive: He never seemed to be at home. (我們發現他相當難找;他似乎都不在家)。illusive 和 illusory 是同義詞,意為「欺騙的;迷惑人的;虛假的;虛幻的;幻覺的;錯覺的;引起錯覺的」(deceptive, unreal, based on an illusion),但 illusory 的使用頻率比 illusive 高出許多,如 an illusory image (假象);an illusory belief (迷惑人的信仰)。

這三個形容詞相應的名詞分別為 allusion, elusion 和 illusion。allusion 意為「間接提及,暗示,暗指;典故」,如 The president made several allusions to the previous government’s failures. (總統數次拐灣抹角地提到前政府的種種缺失)。elusion 意為「逃避,躲避,規避」。illusion 意為「錯覺,幻覺;幻想;錯誤觀念;假象」,如 The sun appears to go around the earth, but this is an illusion.

He suffers from delusions of grandeur. (他有妄自尊大/自命不凡的毛病)。再者,這兩個字分別所構成的一個結構相似的常用片語,”be under the illusion (+ that子句)” (有錯覺;誤以為) 和 “be under the delusion (+ that子句)” (妄想),也維持這項區別,如 They were under the illusion that the company was doing well, but in fact it was in serious trouble. (他們誤以為該公司營運很好,但實際上它陷於嚴重困境中);She has always been under the delusion that she is a great singer. (她一直妄想她是個偉大的歌星)。delusion 的形容詞也有兩個,即 delusive 和 delusory (不常用),它們和 illusory 和 illusive (不常用) 同樣也有意思重疊和意思不同的地方。

Q:文法書上說 kind of, sort of 和 type of 等後面的單數可數名詞前不加不定冠詞,如 What kind of doctor is he?,但一本英文雜誌中卻有這樣的句子 What kind of a plant is this?。是不是該雜誌寫錯了? 還是這兩種寫法都可以? 或是它們的意義並不完全相同?

A:這兩種寫法都可以,且都是正規英語。不過,保守的用法,尤其是正式文件,大多傾向於省略不定冠詞。所以,在此建議讀者在閱讀文法書籍時最好多涉獵幾本,以免學到以偏蓋全的觀念或用法。再舉幾例供大家參考 — 在這些句子中,不定冠詞 “a” 可有可無:

  • What sort of (a) person do you think I am? (你把我當作什麼人?)
= What do you take me for? — 這句話很常用。
  • He should know what kind of (a) job he wants. (他應該知道他想要什麼樣的工作)
  • Do you have this type of (a) material? (你有這種材料嗎?)

不過,要注意且要加以區別的是,如果 kind of/sort of 後面的單數可數名詞前加了形容詞來修飾,那麼雖然同樣是 kind of/sort of,但此時 kind of/sort of 是當副詞用,意為「有點,有幾分」(= somewhat, rather, slightly),這是口語和非正式場合常見的用法。例如:

  • I have sort of a bad back. (我的背部有點痛)
  • This is kind of a late lunch. (這午餐吃得有點晚)

那麼要如何判別這兩種用法之間的不同呢? 茲將其句型整理如下:

  1. 限定詞 + kind of/sort of + (a/an) + 單數可數名詞 — kind of/sort of (在此意為「…種類」) 的前面有 this, that, what 等限定詞,不定冠詞可有可無,名詞前面沒有修飾語。
  2. kind of/sort of + a/an + 形容詞 + 單數可數名詞 — kind of/sort of (在此意為「有點,有幾分」) 的前面沒有限定詞,不定冠詞不能省略,名詞前面有修飾語。

Transport (n., v.), transportation (n.)

當名詞用的 transport 和 transportation 在「交通,運輸;交通系統,運輸系統;交通/運輸工具,交通車輛」等意思上是同義詞,但 transport 是英式英語用字,而美式英語通常使用 transportation,不過英式英語現在使用 transportation 來代替 transport 的情況亦時有所聞,如 The transport/transportation of goods by air is very expensive. (貨物空運是很昂貴的);Taipei’s public transport/transportation system is among the finest in the world. (台北的大眾運輸系統是世界一流的);The railway/railroad gives free transport/transportation for a certain amount of luggage/baggage. (鐵路免費運送一定數量的行李);What will we do for transport/transportation to and from the airport? (我們往返機場該使用什麼交通工具?)。

除上述意思外,transportation 還意為「(從前用作刑罰的) 流放,放逐」,而這意思是 transport 所沒有的,但當動詞用的 transport 則有這意思;換言之,在「流放,放逐」的意思上,名詞是 transportation,而動詞是 transport。英式英語和美式英語都使用 transportation 來表示「流放,放逐」的意思,如 The sentence was transportation to Australia. (判決是放逐到澳洲)。transport 還意為「(軍用) 運輸機,運輸船」,而這意思是 transportation 所沒有的;再者,transport 另有一個意思也是 transportation 所沒有的,那就是「激情,狂喜」,大多用在正式文件和文學作品中,如 a transport of delight/joy/rapture (欣喜若狂);My sister was in a transport of delight/joy/rapture at the good news. (我姊姊聽到這好消息欣喜若狂)。

當動詞用的 transport 除了上述「流放,放逐」的意思外,還意為「運送,運輸;使欣喜若狂,使激動」,其中以「運送,運輸」最常見,如 Trucks transport the steel to the ports. (卡車把鋼材運到港口);A shuttle bus transports all employees from their homes. (有一輛交通車接送員工上班);British prisoners used to be transported to Australia. (從前英國的囚犯常被流放到澳洲);Sarah was transported with joy by the good news. (莎拉聽到這好消息欣喜萬分)。

Male, female (adjs., nn.), masculine, feminine (adjs.)

Male 指的是生物的性別,當形容詞用時意為「男性的,雄 (性) 的,公的;男子的」,如 A male nurse took her temperature. (一位男護士給她量了體溫);There is only one magazine with a predominantly male readership in the city. (本市只有一份讀者主要是男性的雜誌);a male monkey (公猴);a male elephant (雄象);male flowers (雄花 — 不會結果實的花)。就人的性別而言,這個字只用來做男性和女性的區別以及說明與男女性別有關的事物,並無進一步的含意,如 We have a male French teacher and a female German teacher. (我們有一位男法文老師和一位女德文老師);the male/female body (男性 [女性] 身體)。

Female 為 male 的反義詞,指的也是生物的性別,當形容詞用時意為「女性的,雌 (性) 的,母的;女子的」,如 Sewing is considered a female occupation. (縫紉被認為是女性的職業);We only employ female workers. (我們只雇用女工);A female deer was shot dead. (一隻母鹿被射殺)。同樣地,就人的性別而言,這個字只用來做男性和女性的區別以及說明與男女性別有關的事物,並無進一步的含意,如 There are more female students than male students at the college. (這所大學的女學生比男學生多);The female voice tends to be higher than the male voice.

Haemophilia is almost exclusively restricted to males. (血友病幾乎都發生在男性身上)。

Masculine 和 feminine 互為相反詞,前者意為「男性的;男子氣概的;男子漢的;(語法) 陽性的」,後者意為「女性的;嬌柔的;柔和的;女孩子氣的;適合女子的;(語法) 陰性的」。這兩個形容詞只能用來指人,但都可指男性和女性,是用來描述各該性別所特有的性質或屬性,如 He looks very masculine in his new uniform. (他穿上新制服看起來很有男子氣概);Mary has a deep masculine voice. (瑪麗有男子一般深沈的嗓音);Our new principal is a middle-aged masculine looking woman. (我們的新校長是一位男子模樣的中年女士);Actor is a masculine noun. (Actor 是個陽性名詞);conventional notions of feminine beauty (對女性美的傳統觀念);Tom has a rather feminine voice. (湯姆的聲音聽起來相當娘娘腔);He has delicate feminine hands. (他有一雙女子一般細嫩的手);Actress is a feminine noun. (Actress 是個陰性名詞)。

Dexterous, dextrous (adj.), dexterously (adv.), dexterity, dexterousness (nn.) / ambidextrous (adj.), ambidextrously (adv.), ambidexterity (n.)

這兩組字的意思在使用上並不會造成混淆,以形容詞為例,dexterous 意為「靈巧的,熟練的,敏捷的」,如 She untied the knots with dexterous fingers. (她用靈巧的手指解開繩結),而 ambidextrous 意為「左右手都能靈巧運用的」,如 Left-handed people are usually ambidextrous.

Q:We were a long ways from home. (我們離家很遠) 這句中的複數名詞 ways 為何跟 a 用在一起呢? 這不是違反文法規則嗎?

A:這是美式英語特有的用法。在美式英語中,當 way 意為「路程,路途,距離」時,ways 往往被用作 way 的相等詞。注意:這種用法只有在 way 表示上述意思時才適用,若為其他意思 (如「方法,方式,手段」等) 則不適用。雖然它通常被視為非正式用法,但卻是標準用法。例如:

  • We’ve a long way/ways to go yet. (我們還有很長的路要走)
  • The Lunar New Year is still a long way/ways off. (現在離農曆新年還早呢)

Precipitate, precipitous (adjs.), precipitately, precipitously (advs.)

Precipitate 意為「輕率的;魯莽的;倉促的;突然的」(rash, abrupt, hasty, sudden),如 The President made a rather precipitate departure. (總統相當倉促地離開了);They acted with precipitate haste. (他們魯莽倉促地採取行動);precipitate action (魯莽/輕率的舉動)。precipitous 意為「險峻的,陡峭的;急劇的」(steep),可表示字面和比喻的意思,如 A precipitous path led down the cliff. (懸崖往下有一條陡峭的小路);She did not dare to bike down the precipitous slope. (她不敢騎著腳踏車衝下陡峭的斜坡);a precipitous drop in commodity prices (商品價格急劇滑落);a precipitous decline in population (人口驟降)。

Precipitous 除上述意思外也意為「輕率的;魯莽的;倉促的;突然的」;換言之,就此意思而言,precipitate 和 precipitous 是同義詞,如 Their precipitous entry into the foreign markets ended in disaster.

Such headaches can be precipitated by food as well as stress. (這類頭痛會因為食物和壓力而猝發);Fears about the solvency of the banks precipitated the great economic crash. (對銀行償付能力的擔憂更加速了經濟的崩潰);The car overturned and precipitated us into the ditch. (車子翻了,我們被摔進了溝裡);The company was precipitated into ruin when the exchange rate dropped. (匯率下降時,公司一下子破產倒閉了);The border incident precipitated the two countries into war. (邊界事件把兩國突然推向戰爭)。
