Avenge (v.), revenge (n., v.), vengeance (n.)

He swore to avenge his brother. They avenged his death by burning the village. He resolved to avenge the insult on the boss.

He revenged himself on those who had killed his parents. (他向那些殺害他雙親的人進行報復);Tom wanted to revenge himself on John for his arrogance. avenge 亦可與反身代名詞連用來構成 avenge oneself on somebody (for something) 句型:They avenged themselves on their enemy. (他們向敵人報復);They began to avenge themselves on their neighbors for the years of suppression.

它們皆與 take 和 on 構成 take revenge/vengeance on somebody 句型:He swore to take revenge/vengeance on the people who had killed his sister. (他發誓要報復殺死他姊妹的人);The villagers seemed certain to take revenge/vengeance on the enemy. 然而,在 in revenge for something 這個片語中,revenge 不能用 vengeance 來替換,而在 with a vengeance 這個片語中,vengeance 亦不能用 revenge 來替換。in revenge for 意為「以報… He killed the man in revenge for the murder of his sister. The disease came back with a vengeance.

必須注意的是,get even 係接介系詞 with 再接報復的對象,而 retaliate (不及物動詞) 慣用的句型則是 retaliate against somebody for something。例如:I’d like to get even with the man who attacked my daughter. (我要向侵擾我女兒的那個男人報仇);They have threatened to retaliate against the US for the bombing raid. retaliate 的名詞 retaliation 亦很常見,其後若要接受詞 (報復對象) 也是先接 against;此外,它經常以 in retaliation for something (與 in revenge for 的結構相同) 的型態出現。例如:There is always the risk of possible retaliation against peacekeeping soldiers. (維和部隊總是面臨遭到報復的危險);The car bombings were apparently in retaliation for the arrest of the terrorists.

口語和非正式場合常用的成語 to throw in (or throw up) the sponge 係使用名詞 sponge 的字面意思,亦即「海綿」。 After years of fighting dishonesty in the government he threw in the towel at last and left politics. (他與政府內的不正之風鬥爭多年後,終於承認自己無能為力並退出政界);I hate my work. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the sponge.

Bogof

There are some great bogofs on at the supermarket. There are some great bogof offers in store.

WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get — 所見即所得) 則唸成 WY-SI-WYG 三個音節,不是一個字母一個字母地唸成 W-Y-S-I-W-Y-G。 (= Go away!

TFTPOO (Two for the price of one),意為「買二付一」(買兩個只付一個的價錢)。

Majority, plurality (nn.)

  1. A/The majority 當主詞,其後沒有接 of + 名詞 (或名詞片語) 的情況。 A/The majority was in favor of the proposal. (多數人都贊成這項提案);The majority have refused to pay.
  2. A/The majority of + 複數名詞的情況。 The majority of doctors agree that smoking is extremely harmful to health. 要注意的是,A/The majority of 的後面不可接不可數名詞,所以 a (or the) majority of experience, forgiveness, interest, tolerance, work 等等都是錯誤的,必須改為 most of the experience, forgiveness, ….。
The majority was small but sufficient to enable the Conservatives to form a government.

He won by a plurality/majority of 900 votes. (他以 900 票之多當選),He won by a plurality/majority of two: The vote was seven to five. They had a plurality in the election but were just short of a majority.

Resource, recourse, resort (nn.)

My father is my main resource [recourse, resort] when I’m out of funds. (當我缺錢時,我父親是我的主要資源 [依靠]);Violence was our only resource/recourse/resort.

在 have recourse/resort to (依靠;訴諸於) 和 without recourse/resort to (不靠;不訴諸於) 等片語中,recourse 和 resort 是同義詞,不能用 resource 來代替。 The system allows doctors to have recourse to specialist opinion. (該制度使醫生能夠聽取專家的意見);We hope a settlement can be reached without recourse to legal action. They settled the dispute without recourse to violence. = They settled the dispute without resort to violence. = They settled the dispute without resorting to violence.

然而,在 as a last resort/resource (英式英語亦經常寫成 in the last resort) 中,resort 和 resource 可以互換,但卻不能用 recourse 來代替。as a last resort/resource As a/In the last resort, we could borrow more money from the bank. (作為最後手段,我們可以向銀行再借些錢);The government will impose a state of emergency only as a last resort. There are many summer resorts in the mountains. (山裡有許多避暑勝地);a ski/skiing resort (滑雪勝地);a seaside resort (海濱度假勝地);a health resort (療養地);a resort island/town (度假島/度假城)。

Cannot, can not, can’t / can, may (aux.)

情態或語氣助動詞 (modal or modal auxiliary) can 的否定形式 cannot,出現的頻率低於否定縮寫字 can’t,但卻遠高於 can not;can not 有時是被用來加強語氣或用來強調 not。 與 can’t 一樣,cannot 常被用來取代 may not。

Can I go to the bathroom? May I go to the bathroom? After you clean your room, you can go outside and play.

Students may pick up the application forms tomorrow. You may leave the room when you’re finished. You can leave the room when you’re finished.

I may go with you. (我可能跟你一起去);I may not go with you. 在做禮貌的請求時,尤其是書面的請求,我們都是使用 may:May I have your attention, please? It may rain this afternoon. (今天下午可能下雨);Bone spurs can be very painful. 不過,在這項用法中,may 和 can 通常都是用人稱當主詞:You may be right. (你可能是對的);You may see him at the concert. (你可能在音樂會見到他);From the mountaintop you can see the ocean on a clear day. (天氣晴朗時你從山頂可能會看到大海);Even an experienced driver can get lost in this town.

Speciality, specialty (nn.)

The menu changes daily, though the speciality [specialty] is seafood. (菜單每天都變,但招牌菜是海鮮);Her speciality [specialty] is ancient Greek poetry. 然而,speciality 大多用在英式英語中,而 specialty 主要是美式英語用字,所以在 the specialty of the house 等片語或上下文中,大多數美國人都使用 specialty,而英國人則大多使用 speciality;(the) specialty of the house 這個慣用語意為「這家餐廳的招牌菜」,其中 house = restaurant,或許你可以用 specialty/speciality of the restaurant 來表達相同的意思,但這就顯得不夠道地。

Lee’s specialty is pediatrics.

Swell (v., adj., n., interj.)

He has a swelled head. He has a swollen head. 或He’s swollen-headed.。至於其他所有形容詞的應用幾乎都是使用 swollen:His knee was badly swollen. (他的膝蓋嚴重腫脹);The swollen streams and rivers caused great damage.

The students had swelled until the hall was full. (學生人數一直增加,整個禮堂座無虛席 — 令我們感到雀躍);The students had swollen until the hall was jammed (學生人數一直增加,整個禮堂都被擠爆了 — 令我們擔心,萬一發生火災或恐慌事件,那該怎麼辦)。

She is a swell girl. (她是一個好女孩);He is a swell teacher. He’s a real swell.
