Proportional, proportionable, proportionate (adjs.)

這三個形容詞幾乎是同義詞,意為「(大小、數量或程度) 均衡的,相稱的;(大小或數量) 與…成比例的,按比例的」,通常與介系詞 to 連用,如 The sentence is not proportional to the crime. (量刑與罪行不相稱);The payment he will have to make will be proportional to the damage he has done. (他需要付的錢是根據他所造成的損失大小而定);Wages will rise at a rate proportionate to the amount of work you do. (工資將與你所做的工作量成比例增加);You will have to work an extra three days, but there will be a proportionable increase in your pay.

Accumulative, cumulative (adjs.)

這兩個形容詞均意為「累積的;漸增的」,但它們只是部分同義詞,因為一般而言,accumulative 含有「鑽鑽營營;貪得無厭;利慾薰心」(acquisitiveness) 的言外之意,如 He has accumulative drives for fame and money. (他對名利的慾望與日俱增);We live in an accumulative society. (我們生活在一個貪得無厭的社會),或暗示一個人具有好積聚、好收藏的個性,如 Her accumulative energies are unflagging; she is one of the great collectors. (她蓄積的能量歷久不衰;她是偉大的收藏家之一)。

Cumulative 通常沒有貶抑的含意,如 the cumulative total (累計總額;累積總數); a cumulative effect (累積效應;蓄積作用);At the end of October, the cumulative total (number) of reported H1N1 cases was more than 100. (在10月底,已呈報的新流感個案已累積至逾 100 件);He believes the ad campaign will eventually be successful and will have a positive cumulative effect on sales volume. (他相信廣告活動終將成功,銷售量也會正面地逐步增長)。a cumulative effect 亦可寫成 an accumulative effect,但後者相當少用。

Male, female (adjs., nn.), masculine, feminine (adjs.)

Male 指的是生物的性別,當形容詞用時意為「男性的,雄 (性) 的,公的;男子的」,如 A male nurse took her temperature. (一位男護士給她量了體溫);There is only one magazine with a predominantly male readership in the city. (本市只有一份讀者主要是男性的雜誌);a male monkey (公猴);a male elephant (雄象);male flowers (雄花 — 不會結果實的花)。就人的性別而言,這個字只用來做男性和女性的區別以及說明與男女性別有關的事物,並無進一步的含意,如 We have a male French teacher and a female German teacher. (我們有一位男法文老師和一位女德文老師);the male/female body (男性 [女性] 身體)。

Female 為 male 的反義詞,指的也是生物的性別,當形容詞用時意為「女性的,雌 (性) 的,母的;女子的」,如 Sewing is considered a female occupation. (縫紉被認為是女性的職業);We only employ female workers. (我們只雇用女工);A female deer was shot dead. (一隻母鹿被射殺)。同樣地,就人的性別而言,這個字只用來做男性和女性的區別以及說明與男女性別有關的事物,並無進一步的含意,如 There are more female students than male students at the college. (這所大學的女學生比男學生多);The female voice tends to be higher than the male voice.

Haemophilia is almost exclusively restricted to males. (血友病幾乎都發生在男性身上)。

Masculine 和 feminine 互為相反詞,前者意為「男性的;男子氣概的;男子漢的;(語法) 陽性的」,後者意為「女性的;嬌柔的;柔和的;女孩子氣的;適合女子的;(語法) 陰性的」。這兩個形容詞只能用來指人,但都可指男性和女性,是用來描述各該性別所特有的性質或屬性,如 He looks very masculine in his new uniform. (他穿上新制服看起來很有男子氣概);Mary has a deep masculine voice. (瑪麗有男子一般深沈的嗓音);Our new principal is a middle-aged masculine looking woman. (我們的新校長是一位男子模樣的中年女士);Actor is a masculine noun. (Actor 是個陽性名詞);conventional notions of feminine beauty (對女性美的傳統觀念);Tom has a rather feminine voice. (湯姆的聲音聽起來相當娘娘腔);He has delicate feminine hands. (他有一雙女子一般細嫩的手);Actress is a feminine noun. (Actress 是個陰性名詞)。

Dexterous, dextrous (adj.), dexterously (adv.), dexterity, dexterousness (nn.) / ambidextrous (adj.), ambidextrously (adv.), ambidexterity (n.)

這兩組字的意思在使用上並不會造成混淆,以形容詞為例,dexterous 意為「靈巧的,熟練的,敏捷的」,如 She untied the knots with dexterous fingers. (她用靈巧的手指解開繩結),而 ambidextrous 意為「左右手都能靈巧運用的」,如 Left-handed people are usually ambidextrous.

Homogeneous, homogenous (adjs.)

這兩個形容詞在「同種類的;同性質的;均勻的;由相同成分或成員所組成的」意思上幾乎可以互換,如 It was a homogeneous/homogenous community, its members holding remarkably similar values. (那是個同質的社區,因為其成員的價值觀極為相似);The unemployed are not a homogeneous/homogenous group. (失業者並非同質的群體);homogeneous/homogenous mixture (均勻的混合物)。由於 homogeneous 要比 homogenous 來得常用許多,因此現在有些字典就不收錄 homogenous 這個字了。

儘管若干字典將這兩個字視為完全同義詞,但事實並非如此,因為在生物學上,homogenous 意為「同源的;同質的 (指因遺傳而構造相似的)」,特指構造類似的不同動物,牠們的血統來自共同的祖先,如 These animals are homogenous, as their similar physiology makes clear.

Q:在「the + 比較級…,the + 比較級…」這句型中,”the” 應該不是定冠詞吧!? 若不是,它們是什麼詞類呢?

A:「the + 比較級 + (子句),the + 比較級 + (子句)」這種常見句型意為「越…,越…;愈…,愈…」。與 “both… and…”、”either… or…”、”neither… nor…”、”not only… but also…” 等一樣,它也是一種相關字組 (correlative),亦即與其兩個元素連用的詞類和結構必須平行對稱、對仗工整。倘若這句型中沒有括弧所示的子句 (S + V),那麼其中的逗點可以省略,如 The sooner the better. (越快越好);The more the merrier. (多多益善;人越多越熱鬧)。

誠然,句中的兩個 the 都不是定冠詞。由於在這個句型中,前面部分是附屬子句,而後面部分為主要子句,因此國內有些文法書認為前面的 the 為連接詞,而後面的 the 為副詞,但筆者認為,由於「比較級」不是形容詞就是副詞,因此第一個 the 應該也是副詞才對,因為只有副詞才能修飾形容詞和副詞。著名的 The New Fowler’s Modern English Usage 一書在其 “Supplement” (補遺) 中也針對這句型及其兩個 the 的詞類做了說明,該書也認為它們都是副詞。

Precipitate, precipitous (adjs.), precipitately, precipitously (advs.)

Precipitate 意為「輕率的;魯莽的;倉促的;突然的」(rash, abrupt, hasty, sudden),如 The President made a rather precipitate departure. (總統相當倉促地離開了);They acted with precipitate haste. (他們魯莽倉促地採取行動);precipitate action (魯莽/輕率的舉動)。precipitous 意為「險峻的,陡峭的;急劇的」(steep),可表示字面和比喻的意思,如 A precipitous path led down the cliff. (懸崖往下有一條陡峭的小路);She did not dare to bike down the precipitous slope. (她不敢騎著腳踏車衝下陡峭的斜坡);a precipitous drop in commodity prices (商品價格急劇滑落);a precipitous decline in population (人口驟降)。

Precipitous 除上述意思外也意為「輕率的;魯莽的;倉促的;突然的」;換言之,就此意思而言,precipitate 和 precipitous 是同義詞,如 Their precipitous entry into the foreign markets ended in disaster.

Such headaches can be precipitated by food as well as stress. (這類頭痛會因為食物和壓力而猝發);Fears about the solvency of the banks precipitated the great economic crash. (對銀行償付能力的擔憂更加速了經濟的崩潰);The car overturned and precipitated us into the ditch. (車子翻了,我們被摔進了溝裡);The company was precipitated into ruin when the exchange rate dropped. (匯率下降時,公司一下子破產倒閉了);The border incident precipitated the two countries into war. (邊界事件把兩國突然推向戰爭)。

Baleful, baneful (adjs.)

Baleful 意為「有害的;帶有威脅的;邪惡的」(harmful, threatening, sinister),如 She gave me a baleful stare. (她帶有惡意地瞪了我一眼);a baleful look (邪惡的目光)。baneful 意為「有害的;邪惡的;破壞性的;毀滅性的;致命的」(harmful, evil, destructive, ruinous, deadly, fatal),如 There is a baneful influence of their foreign policy on future peace talks. (他們的外交政策對未來的和平談判有破壞性影響)。

這兩個形容詞的意思有諸多重疊,但 baleful 通常用來指任何帶有威脅或惡意但尚未造成實質危害的事物,而 baneful 則大多用來指實際上會造成危害、破壞、毀滅或死亡的事物。不過,在現代英語中,baneful 越來越少用。

Distrust, mistrust (vv., nn.)

Distrust 和 mistrust 當 (及物) 動詞用時均意為「不信任,不相信,懷疑」,通常可以互換,如 Somehow I distrust/mistrust the whole business. (不知怎麼地,我就是不相信這整件事) ;He distrusts/mistrusts banks, so he keeps his money at home. (他認為銀行靠不住,所以把錢存在家裡)。

然而,distrust 比 mistrust 要來得常用,且含有「猜忌;猜疑」(suspicion) 的意思,所以當某人曾經有欺騙或其他負面行為或某事物曾經造成危害或產生不良影響,或者當事人認為某人或某事物可能會做出上述行為或發生上述情況,因而對該等人事物產生不信任感或懷疑時,一般都使用 distrust 而不用 mistrust,如 I have known him to be deceitful in the past and I have come to distrust everything he says. (我知道他過去愛騙人,所以我對他所說的事情一概不信);Most people distrust politicians. (大多數人都不信任政客);He distrusts her because he thinks she’ll cheat him. (他不信任她,因為他認為她會騙他)。

Mistrust 是指比較不確定或不是很肯定的「不信任」或指對自己相關事物的「懷疑」,如 There was something about her manner that made me uneasy and I found myself beginning to mistrust her. (某件跟她態度有關的事情令我不安,結果我發現自己開始不信任她);She told herself she had no reason to mistrust him. (她告訴自己沒有理由不信任他);Why do you mistrust him so much? He seems honest enough to me. (你為何如此不信任他呢? 我覺得他似乎很老實);I mistrust my own judgment when it comes to my appointment of Mike as new English teacher. (談到我聘任麥可為新的英文老師一事,我懷疑自己的判斷力)。

Distrust 和 mistrust 亦皆可當 (不可數) 名詞用,意思也同樣為「不信任,不相信,懷疑」,其後經常與介系詞 of 連用,如 The child looked at the stranger with distrust. (那孩子用懷疑的目光望著陌生人);I have a distrust of airplanes. (我對飛機信不過);Mistrust between the two countries is intense. (兩國間彼此非常不信任);He has a deep/strong mistrust of anything new. (他對任何新事物都極不信任)。

再者,distrust 和 mistrust 的形容詞分別為 distrustful 和 mistrustful,兩者均意為「不信任的,不相信的,懷疑的」,其後亦經常與介系詞 of 連用,但 mistrustful 有時也與 toward 連用,如 The old woman is distrustful of her children’s intentions. (這位老婦人懷疑她子女的意圖);They were profoundly distrustful of anything new. (他們對任何新事物都極不信任);She was mistrustful of Frank’s loyalty. (她懷疑法蘭克的忠誠);My wife was becoming increasingly mistrustful toward doctors. (我太太越來越不相信醫生)。

Comic (adj., n.), comical (adj.)

當形容詞用時,comic 和 comical 雖在一些上下文中可以互換,但並非完全同義詞。

Comic 和 comical 均意為「滑稽的,好笑的」,但 comic 是指事先計畫好、有意使人發笑或產生娛樂「笑」果,而 comical 則是指無意間使人發笑或產生娛樂「笑」果,如 The play had comic moments. (這齣戲裡有一些搞笑的片段);The students gave a comic performance. (學生做了滑稽表演);Her comic songs did not raise a smile. (她的滑稽歌曲未使人發笑);The teacher wore a comical hat. (老師戴了一頂滑稽可笑的帽子);It was quite comical to see him sit there quietly. (看他靜靜地坐在那裡頗為好笑);a comical act (滑稽可笑的行為)。

此外,comic 還意為「喜劇的」(僅用於名詞之前),而這是 comical 所沒有的意思,如 He is a comic actor/writer. (他是喜劇演員/作家)。所以,從上述可知,a comic situation 和 a comical situation 的意思並不相同,前者是指事先經過安排的喜劇的情節,而後者是指無意間引發的滑稽可笑或好笑的場面或情況。

Comic 還可當名詞用,有兩個意思,一為「漫畫書」(= comic book。連環漫畫叫做 comic strip),如 I’ve read many comics (or comic books). (我已看了許多漫畫書);另一為「喜劇演員」(= comedian),如 His father is one of the world’s best-known comics (or comedians). (他父親是全世界最有名的喜劇演員之一)。
