That river is very dangerous to swim in.

  • That river is very dangerous to swim in.
  • That river is very dangerous to swim.

Impending vs. pending

Impending 意為「(通常指不愉快或具有威脅性的事情或情勢) 即將發生的,逼近的」,但這個形容詞僅能用在名詞之前,如 the impending elections (即將到來的選舉);impending doom (行將毀滅);the impending exams (即將舉行的考試);They were unaware of the impending disaster. (他們未察覺到大難臨頭);The dark clouds suggest an impending storm.

Pending 主要意為「懸而未決的;未定的;待完成的」,但這個形容詞也有「即將發生的,逼近的」意思,如 the pending case (懸案);the pending agreement (懸而未決的協議);The murder case has been pending for nearly 10 years. (這一殺人案已懸而未決近 10 年);the pending economic union of ASEAN member states (東協會員國即將達成的經濟聯盟);The results of the investigation were pending.

Pending our boss’s return from Japan, let us get everything ready. (讓我們在老闆從日本回來之前把一切準備就緒);Allen delayed his decision pending his father’s return. (艾倫等到他父親回來之後才做出決定);The criminals were held in custody pending trial.

Such 還是 so 呢?

Quite

Quite 為程度副詞,視其後所接的字詞而定,它有兩個意思:1.「相當,尚可,頗,有幾分」(rather, fairly, to some degree);2.「很,非常,完全,十分」(very, totally or completely)。例如:

  • Laura had been quite good at drawing when she was at school.
  • We were quite excited about buying a new car.
  • His life has been quite different ever since his wife died.
  • The victim remembered those rogues quite clearly.

Amy is the tallest girl in our class.

  • Amy is the tallest girl in our class.
  • Amy is the tallest girl of our class.

  • All the sisters are pretty, but Daisy’s the prettiest of them all.

英文:be busted (v.)

(我的電腦壞了);I’m surprised his company went bust after only a year in business.

  • Daniel was busted and had to confess (to) cheating in/on the exam.
  • I’m busted! Now everyone knows I have a big crush on Teresa.
  • Amy was busted cheating on her husband after selfies reveal hidden truth.

  • He believes he can elicit the truth from the suspect after much questioning.
  • He believes he can illicit the truth from the suspect after much questioning.

Huge, vast (adjs.)

There are two huge buildings in the community.

There’s a huge ship in the sea. (海上有一艘巨大的輪船);They have three huge dogs. (他們養了三隻巨型犬);The billionaire has several huge houses. (那個億萬富豪擁有好幾棟巨宅);The actress earns huge amounts of money from endorsement.
