  • Professor Lee has talked tough to all of us.
  • I can talk tough and scare that guy, but I can’t really act tough.

hecka

  • That car is hecka cool.
  • Henry is hecka stupid.
  • I hecka admire you.
  • You have to be hecka smart to pass this test.

I want to invite all of them.

A:不可以! 大多數人可能都認為,由於 all of + 名詞時,of 可以省略 (both of 和 half of 的情況亦然),因此在所有 all of 的句型或用法中,都可以將 of 省略,非也! 這僅適用於 all of 後接 the, our, your, this, those, his, her 等限定詞、再接名詞的情況,若是接 us, you, them, it, him 和 her 等 (受格) 代名詞,那麼 of 就不能省略,否則就大錯特錯了。例如:

  • All of you must go there.
  • I want to invite all of them.
  • A: Where is my cake?
B: I’ve eaten all it. (誤) (我把它全部吃光了) - all it 須改為 all of it 才對。

All you need is a good night’s sleep.

Assail vs. assault

While the business community has assailed the tax reform, most of the government officials have come out to support it. (儘管商業界抨擊這項稅改,但大多數政府官員都挺身而出表示支持);Police are searching for a man who used a steel pipe to assault a famous singer. (警方正在搜尋一名用鋼管攻擊一位名歌手的男子);The county magistrate was assaulted by young demonstrators.

  • Honestly! What a stupid thing to do!
  • Honestly! Is it necessary for you to spend so much money every month?

  • I bought a five-foot table yesterday.
  • This is a 10-page document.
  • Fiona worked as a part-time librarian.
  • That is an all-too-common mistake.

  • Did you manage to get the Bruno Mars tickets?
  • Sarah Wayne Callies is a The Walking Dead star.

  • Did you manage to get the Bruno Mars Tickets?

  • It is a bona fide commercial transaction.
  • Eric looked at the handbag in the water, looked Bonnie in the eye and then turned away, giving her a “get it yourself” look.
  • For more than three years, Lance claimed to be part of the “Aquitaine D-650” crew before admitting to his cousin at a party that he was not.

  • Malala is an extremely brave girl.
  • It was a beautifully painted self-portrait in a skillfully carved frame.

  • Hank took the well-fatted calf to the riverside.
  • Hank took the well fatted calf to the riverside. - well fatted calf 可能被理解為 “well (= healthy) and fatted calf ” (健康的小肥牛)。

  • Mayday is a well-known band.
  • Mayday is a widely known band. (「

If we all set to, we should be able to finish this in a few hours.

If we all set to, we should be able to finish this in a few hours.

  • If we all set to, we should be able to finish this in a few hours.
  • Jack and his family fell to with great relish.
  • The meal’s all ready, you guys, fall to!

  • Don’t worry! She faints all the time. She always comes to after a few minutes.
  • Rachel came to after a while.

3. 向前 (forwards)。例如:

  • The swing rocked to and fro.
  • That pendulum swung to and fro. 值得一提的是,雖然 to and fro 中的 to 相當於 forwards,而 fro 相當於 backwards,但 to and fro 卻不等於 forwards and backwards,而是等於 backwards and forwards,因為後者為英文的慣用語,如 The president began to pace backwards and forwards.

  • The quantity is imprecise but fairly close to correct.
  • My father looks much older when I see him from close to.

  • The wind blew the door to.
  • I pulled/pushed the window to.

  • I can understand everything you say about wanting to go on a trip to Japan with Mike. However, I am totally against it.
  • Martha had been living in Jiangjun Village for over a decade. Nevertheless, the villagers still considered him to be an outsider.

  • There will be no more pay increases this year. That is for sure. We have, however, agreed to carry out a full review of pay and conditions.
  • There will be no more pay increases this year. That is for sure. We have agreed, nevertheless, to carry out a full review of pay and conditions.

He’s still able to get around quite well.

  • His whole life has been plagued by illness, however.
  • His whole life has been plagued by illness, nevertheless.

英文中比 however 和 nevertheless 更為非正式的用語則有 even so, in spite of this, yet 或 yet…still。

  • Mary’s really quite ill and has been for some time. Even so / In spite of this she remains in good spirits.
  • Allen has over ten million NT dollars in his bank account. Yet he still gets up at six every morning to go to work.

  • Benjamin is, moreover, a novelist of promise.
  • Bicycling is a good exercise; moreover, it doesn’t pollute the air.
  • Kevin is inefficient, and furthermore he is innocent of any sense of responsibility.
  • In addition, Benjamin is a novelist of promise.

Q:The ground is soaking wet because it has been raining all night.

  • You’re dripping/soaking/sopping wet!
  • The ground is dripping/soaking/sopping wet because it has been raining all night.

  • Your hands are freezing cold!
  • I remember it was freezing cold that day.

  • All the delicate plants died last night in the freezing cold.
  • I always thought that I wouldn’t be able to stand the freezing cold and the boring darkness before I moved to Moscow.

  • Paul came home roaring drunk last night.
  • Melissa’s roaring drunk.
