-ward, -wards (字尾)

這兩個字尾與 back, down, up 或 on 等所構成的字幾乎隨處可見。

He is a backward child.
She looked backward/backwards when she heard someone calling her.

There is a downward trend of share prices.
He looked downward/downwards to avoid my eyes.

We can see the forward part of the ship.
He hurried forward/forwards to meet her.

The plane’s onward movement was slowed by adverse winds.
Miss Lee hurried onward/onwards.

There is an upward movement of prices.
The bird flew upward/upwards.

Blame

They blamed the Americans for the failure of the talks.
= They blamed the failure of the talks on the Americans.
They blamed the rise in oil prices for the big increase in inflation.

當動詞用時,blame 還有一個片語也滿常見的,那就是:be to blame (for),意為「應 (為…) The students were not to blame for the fault.

The judge laid/put the blame for the accident on the driver of the truck.
We are ready to take/bear the blame for what has happened.

Tolerance, tolerant

Tolerance 後面可以接 for, of, to, towards 等介系詞 (若是接 to,則 tolerance 意為「忍受能力,耐久力」),但 tolerant 只能接介系詞 of。例如:

Her tolerance of his grouchiness is impressive.
He has no tolerance for criticism.
It is a country with a reputation for tolerance towards religious minorities.
Many old people have a very limited tolerance to cold.
She has little tolerance to sunlight.
She is tolerant of his foibles.

He is intolerant of any opposition.

More of a/an + 名詞 + than + 名詞

John is more pompous (or pretentious) than Mike.
Calvin writes more beautifully than any other person in his office.

He is more of a fool than I thought.
= He is more foolish than I thought.

還不如說是…」,而 more of a/an + 名詞 + than + 名詞就是這個意思。例如:

Optimization is more of an art than a science.
= Optimization is more artistic than scientific.

Optimization is more artistic than scientific.
= Optimization is less scientific than artistic.
= Optimization is not so much scientific as artistic.

More of a/an + 名詞1 + than + 名詞2
= more + 形容詞1 + than + 形容詞2
= not so much + 形容詞2 + as + 形容詞1

Hindrance, hinderance

Hindrance 意為「妨礙,障礙,阻礙;障礙物,阻礙物」,其後通常接介系詞 to 或 in:His stutter was only a mild hindrance to [in] his public speaking. (他的結巴僅為他的演說造成輕微的障礙);This delay has caused some hindrance to [in] my plans. 不過,它偶爾接 of:No arthritic hindrance of movement was going to keep him idle.

Solution to 和 solution for

某個問題的解決方法或方程式的解答,英文叫做 the solution to the problem 或 the solution to the equation,亦即 solution 後面慣用的介系詞是 to。

The solution for y in the equation (a) is 5.

Everyone must solve for y in the equation (a).

To solve a problem/crisis/dispute/conflict:
To solve a mystery/puzzle/riddle (of):揭開…之謎
To solve a case/crime/murder:

Search 和 search for 之不同

由上述可知,search for 的意思就是「搜尋,尋找」;所以,我們可以說 search for my car key,但卻不能說 search for my house — 除非房子長腳,會自己走失。因此,當我們要尋找線索、解答等等時,我們必須說 search for the clue, search for the solution,而不能說 search the clue, search the solution。

The police searched the suspect but found no weapon on him.
Scientists are still searching for a cure to the common cold.
The authorities carried out several air searches for survivors of the crash.

最後,當名詞用的 search 還有一個頗為常見的片語,那就是 in search of (注意不能寫成 in search for);這片語與 search for 相當,意思都是「尋找某物」( looking for something 或 trying to find something)。例如:Many people had left their homes to go in search of food.

Included, including 和 inclusive (of)

All of us, me included, are teachers.

All of us are teachers, including me. (包括我在內,我們都是老師/我們都是老師,其中包括我在內);I’m ordering some extra office equipment, including a new printer.

The rent is NTD 6,000 inclusive. All of us are teachers, including me. = All of us are teachers, inclusive of me.

Included, including 和 inclusive (of) 的相反詞分別為 excluded, excluding 和 exclusive (of),用法相同,只是意思變成相反的「除…

All on the plane were lost, including the crew.
= All on the plane were lost, the crew included.
= All on the plane were lost, inclusive of the crew.
= Including the crew, all on the plane were lost.

The hotel charges $5,000 a day, excluding meals.
= The hotel charges $5,000 a day, meals excluded.
= The hotel charges $5,000 a day, exclusive of meals.

All of us, me included, were invited.
= All of us, including me, were invited.
= They invited all of us, inclusive of me.

The rent is $10,000 inclusive.
= The rent is $10,000 inclusive of everything.

Doubt

I have my doubts about his plan. There is no doubt in my mind that he is telling the truth. 或 I don’t doubt (= I am certain) that he is telling the truth. I doubt whether/if he is telling the truth.

To give somebody the benefit of the doubt:
To give something the benefit of the doubt:

Two and three equals five. (2
Two and three equals to five.
Two and three is equal to five. (正)
Two and three is equal five.

Thompson today equaled (or equalled) the world record for the 400 meters.
