Q:Especially men have this problem.

  • Married men and women, especially men, are likely to live longer than those who are not married.

  • Men, especially, have this problem.

  • Also men have this problem.
  • Men also have this problem.

  • Also, most women would agree.
= Furthermore, most women would agree.

Q:I would appreciate “it” if you would pay in cash. 和 I would appreciate if you would pay in cash.

這個動詞的主要意思有四:1.「鑑賞,欣賞,賞識」,如 appreciate good wine (欣賞好酒),wine appreciation (葡萄酒賞析);2.「瞭解,明白」(= understand, realize);3.「感激,感謝」(= be grateful or thankful for);4.「(財產、貨幣等) 增值,升值」,如 His house has appreciated considerably during the past six months. Do you appreciate our problem? I appreciate that you are disappointed by our failure to promote you.

另外,當 appreciate 意為「感激」時,亦有人反對其後直接接 how 或 that (但筆者認為應該還要再加上 if) 所引導的子句,如 Garner’s Modern American Usage 一書的作者 Bryan Garner 就是其中之一。 We appreciate how you’ve worked for the community. (我們對您為社區所做的事表示感激) 應改為 We are grateful for …。

「主詞 + would be grateful if 主詞 + would/could…」

  • I’d be most grateful if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d much appreciate it if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d be much obliged if you could/would give me an interview.

上句中的「主詞 + would be obliged if…」 I will appreciate it if …

I often missed my home a lot when I was abroad. When they came home, I was cooking dinner.

Mary stood under a tree when it began to rain. When Mary stood under a tree, it began to rain.,那麼這是說瑪麗站在樹下之後,雨才開始下 (她沒有淋到雨 — 如果樹葉可以遮雨的話)。 When the film ended, people walked out of the theater.

  • I was enjoying my dinner when my wife came home.
= While I was enjoying my dinner, my wife came home.

  • While I was studying in one room of our dormitory, my roommate was having a party in the other room.
= I was studying in one room of our dormitory while my roommate was having a party in the other room.

Q:Everyone was tired except John. (除約翰外,大家都累了) 這句為何可以寫成 Everyone except John was tired.,但卻不能寫成 Except John everyone was tired.

  • Everyone was tired except John.
  • They all went to the public library last Sunday except him.
  • Every day Mary does nothing except watch TV.

附帶說明:若句子的主動詞為 do/does/did,則 except 後面一般都是接省略 to 的原形動詞,如上句;若主動詞不是 do/does/did,則 except 通常是接帶 to 的不定詞,如 I had no choice except to obey his order.

  • He always goes to work by bike except recently.
  • I can take my holidays at any time except in August.
  • I know nothing about him except that he lives next door.
  • My father usually goes to work by motorbike except when it rains.

1. 在 all, any, every, no, none, anything, anybody, anyone, everything, everybody, everyone, nobody, nothing 等表示泛指的不定代名詞之後,一般都用 except 而不用 except for。例如:

  • She ate everything on the plate except the carrots.
  • I’ve cleaned all the rooms except the toilet.

  • Everyone was tired except John.
  • We go to school every day except Sunday.
  • Except for one old lady, the bus was empty.
  • The road was empty except for a few cars.

Everyone was tired except for John.,但根據第 1 和第 2 項敘述,我們還是寫成 Everyone was tired except John.

3. except for 可置於句首,但 except 卻不行 — 這就是為何 Everyone was tired except John. 不能寫成 Except John everyone was tired. Except for John, everyone was tired.。

  • Except for Mike, we are all under 40.

  • Mr. Lin is a good man except for his bad temper.
  • Your composition is quite excellent except for several spelling mistakes.

5. 僅 except for 有「若非;要不是」(= but for) 的意思,except 並無此義。例如:

  • She would have left her husband years ago except for the children.
= She would have left her husband years ago but for the children.
= She would have left her husband years ago if she had not had the children.
= But that she had the children, she would have left her husband years ago.

  • Excepting Sundays, the library is open daily.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the shop, always excepting blind people’s guide dogs.
  • I think we must keep improving our English not excepting those who have mastered it.
  • All of us, without excepting those who know more about the subject, should study.

Q:”the creation of man” 是「創造人」還是「人的創造」?

Our love for God — We love God. God’s love for us — God loves us.

由上述可知,「NP of NP」結構可能只有殆無疑義的單一意思 (如 the legs of the table),也可能有模稜兩可的雙重意思 (如 the love of God)。

to create man — (上帝) 創造人
Man creates something —

不過,若右 NP 為非人或非動物,則不產生主詞動詞關係,只有動詞受詞關係,如 the creation of the world (創造世界,即 to create the world),the loss of energy (精力的消耗,即 to lose energy 消耗精力)。

(NP1 = NP2):the City of New York (紐約市) — New York is the city;the art of painting (繪畫藝術) — painting is the art:the problem of unemployment (失業問題) — unemployment is the problem。
  • 主屬關係 (NP1 屬於 NP2):the publishing industry of Taipei (台北的出版業);the children of the family (那家的孩子)。
  • 主屬關係 (NP1 屬於 NP2 — 某人屬於某地):the intelligentsia of Paris (巴黎的知識份子);the Chen of Kaohsiung (高雄陳)。
  • 修飾關係 (NP1 修飾 NP2):a glass of beer (一杯啤酒);two pounds of sugar (兩磅糖);three kilometers of bad road (三公里難以行駛的路);ten years of age (十歲)。
  • 修飾關係 (NP2 修飾 NP1):a box of wood (木箱);a house of stone (石屋);a girl of ten (十歲的女孩);a matter of importance (重要事件 — an important matter);a man of ability (有能力的人 — an able man)。

I think we cannot be too careful in choosing friends. I don’t think we can be…。

  • I don’t think (that) I know you.
  • We don’t believe he will come.

He told you yesterday that his wife had gone to Japan, didn’t he?

  • I don’t think he is brainy, is he?
  • We believe she can do it better, can’t she?

2. appear, seem

  • It doesn’t appear that we’ll have a lovely day tomorrow.
  • It doesn’t seem that they know where to go.

具體而言,在 “not… because…”

  • The mountain is not valuable because it is high.
  • You cannot walk away just because someone tells you he doesn’t want to buy.

  • I didn’t happen to be there.
= I happened not to be there.
    = It happened (that) I wasn’t there.
  • They didn’t pretend to see me when I went by.
= They pretended not to see me when I went by.

Transport (n., v.), transportation (n.)

The transport/transportation of goods by air is very expensive. (貨物空運是很昂貴的);Taipei’s public transport/transportation system is among the finest in the world. (台北的大眾運輸系統是世界一流的);The railway/railroad gives free transport/transportation for a certain amount of luggage/baggage. (鐵路免費運送一定數量的行李);What will we do for transport/transportation to and from the airport?

The sentence was transportation to Australia. transport 還意為「(軍用) 運輸機,運輸船」,而這意思是 transportation 所沒有的;再者,transport 另有一個意思也是 transportation 所沒有的,那就是「激情,狂喜」,大多用在正式文件和文學作品中,如 a transport of delight/joy/rapture (欣喜若狂);My sister was in a transport of delight/joy/rapture at the good news.

Trucks transport the steel to the ports. (卡車把鋼材運到港口);A shuttle bus transports all employees from their homes. (有一輛交通車接送員工上班);British prisoners used to be transported to Australia. (從前英國的囚犯常被流放到澳洲);Sarah was transported with joy by the good news.

Q:He was seriously hurt by her unkind words.

A:錯了。

  • He was only slightly hurt in the car accident.
  • She was badly/seriously hurt when she fell off the ladder.

  • I was deeply hurt by the way she just ignored me.
  • He was very/rather/deeply hurt by her unkind words.
  • Don’t hurt my feelings.

  • “Where does it hurt/Where is it hurting, Mr. Lee?”
    “Just here, doctor.”
  • “Tell me where it hurts/where it is hurting.”
    “My arm hurts.”
  • You’re hurting my arm. Ouch! Don’t touch me. That hurts.

  • This will hurt his reputation.
  • This will hurt his chances of being elected.
  • Have another drink — one more won’t hurt.

He hit me in the (不是 my) eye.,He punched the woman on the (不是 her) chest.;但也有人說,He cut his chin. 是正確的,而 He cut the chin. 2. 若 He cut the chin.

「cut, hit, pat, punch, strike 等動詞 + someone (身體部位的所有人) + in/on + the + 身體部位」。

這就是 He cut his chin. 正確,而 He cut the chin. 所以,若 He cut the chin. 改為 He cut himself on the chin.

  • He cut himself on his chin.
  • He cut himself on the chin. (正)
    = He cut his chin.

  • He was cut on his chin.
  • He was cut on the chin. (正)
  • He hit me on my chin.
  • He hit me on the chin.

一般而言,堅硬、突出的部位通常使用 on,如 on the back/head/should/nose,而柔軟、凹陷的部位則使用 in,如 in the eye/face/chest/stomach。在舉例說明之前,有一點必須指出,那就是 chest 一般都用 in the chest,而非問題中的 on the chest:

  • If you give me $50, you can kick me in the stomach.
  • Last night a guy grabbed a bat and beat me in the face.
  • He punched the man on the nose.
  • The woman walked up to him and slapped him in the face twice.
= The woman walked up to him and slapped his face twice.
  • You shouldn’t criticize your husband so much. Why don’t you pat him on the back occasionally? — 句中的 “pat someone on the back” 是個成語,意為「讚揚,誇獎」。

Precipitate, precipitous (adjs.), precipitately, precipitously (advs.)

The President made a rather precipitate departure. (總統相當倉促地離開了);They acted with precipitate haste. (他們魯莽倉促地採取行動);precipitate action (魯莽/輕率的舉動)。 A precipitous path led down the cliff. (懸崖往下有一條陡峭的小路);She did not dare to bike down the precipitous slope. (她不敢騎著腳踏車衝下陡峭的斜坡);a precipitous drop in commodity prices (商品價格急劇滑落);a precipitous decline in population (人口驟降)。

Their precipitous entry into the foreign markets ended in disaster.

Such headaches can be precipitated by food as well as stress. (這類頭痛會因為食物和壓力而猝發);Fears about the solvency of the banks precipitated the great economic crash. (對銀行償付能力的擔憂更加速了經濟的崩潰);The car overturned and precipitated us into the ditch. (車子翻了,我們被摔進了溝裡);The company was precipitated into ruin when the exchange rate dropped. (匯率下降時,公司一下子破產倒閉了);The border incident precipitated the two countries into war.
