Complement, supplement (vv., nn.)

The arrival of 11 new nurses gave the hospital its full complement of 200. Her fees for private tuition supplemented her teacher’s salary.

I would rather you went now.

I would rather you went now.

  • A: Shall we go out for dinner tonight?
B: No, I’d rather we ate at home, if you don’t mind.
  • A: Shall I write to dad and tell him that we’ve sold the car?
    B: I’d rather you didn’t.
  • My mother would rather we caught the bus, rather than walk home after the party.

附帶一提的是,would rather 亦可寫成 had rather (但前者比後者常用多了),所以 I’d rather 可能是 I would rather、也可能是 I had rather 的縮寫,但意思是一樣的。

(1) Class is supposed to begin at 10: 00. (2) Class was supposed to begin at 10: 00.

A:be supposed to 表示的是一種預期 (expectation) 的情況:現在式的 be supposed to 意為「應該」,因此語意上相當於 should 或 ought to (ought to 的語氣比 should 來得強);過去式的 be supposed to 意為「本該發生的事,但實際上卻沒發生」,因此相當於 should have + P.P. 或 ought to have + P.P.。

Class was supposed to begin at 10: 00, but it didn’t begin until 10: 15.

  • Class should have begun at 10: 00 (but it didn’t begin until 10: 15).
  • Class ought to have begun at 10: 00 (but it didn’t begin until 10: 15).

be supposed to 除了上述的意思外,還有一個頗為常見的意思,那就是「一般認為」(to be generally believed/considered)。

  • It is generally believed that mice are afraid of cats.

  • Mice are supposed to be afraid of cats.

  • Mice are generally believed to be afraid of cats.

Fallible, fallacious (adjs.)

fallible 意為「難免犯錯的;可能會出錯的;不完善的;不完美的」(likely to make mistakes or be wrong; imperfect),如 All human beings are fallible. (犯錯乃人之常情);fallible legal system (不完善的司法制度)。

Fallacious 意為「謬誤的」(mistaken; containing a fallacy or an error),如 That was a fallacious argument. (那是謬誤的論點);Your reasoning is obviously fallacious.

Q:”You have spelt it wrong.”

He has been wrongly accused. (他被誣告);You guessed wrong. You have spelt it wrong.

Wrong/wrongly 的反義詞 right/rightly 的用法亦同,如 I am rightly informed. (我得到正確的消息);Did I do it right? He was driving his mum’s car, if I remember right/rightly. 此外,rightly or wrongly (對或不對) 這個片語不可寫成 right or wrong,而且前後順序也不能對調,亦即不能寫成 wrongly or rightly:He believed, rightly or wrongly, that she was guilty. 再者,由 wrong (副詞) 所構成的幾個片語都相當常用,如 get someone wrong (誤會、誤解某人):Don’t get me wrong, there’s no offence meant. (別誤會,我沒有冒犯之意);go wrong (出錯,搞錯,弄錯;走錯方向;不對勁):I didn’t know where I went wrong.

A total of 300 passengers WAS killed in the plane crash. 或 A total of 300 passengers WERE killed in the plane crash.

A:一般而言,「a total of + 複數可數名詞」是接複數動詞 (如 were),而「the total of + 複數可數名詞」接單數動詞。 A total of 300 passengers WERE killed in the plane crash.

A number of well-qualified people have recently left the company. The number of skilled workers is gradually increasing.

施洗禮),organize/organise (組織;籌辦),realize/realise (瞭解;意識到),recognize/recognise (認出;承認;認可) 等等。

有些人反對現代創造新動詞的趨勢,即在名詞或形容詞後面加上 -ize/-ise,如 pedestrianize/pedestrianise (使成為行人專用道;步行),hospitalize/hospitalise (使…住院治療),prioritize/prioritise (按優先順序處理),finalize/finalise (敲定,完成) 等等。 然而,對於既沒有較簡易型態又沒有同義詞的 -ize/-ise 動詞 (及其衍生字) 來說,它們的作用可就大矣,如 to computerize the stock control system (使庫存控制系統電腦化);the decimalization of British currency (英國貨幣改為十進制)。

My entire family now worships in the church (where or which) my great grandfather used to be a minister.

My entire family now worships in the church (where or which) my great grandfather used to be a minister. (現在我們全家正在我曾祖父過去擔任牧師的教堂做禮拜) 這句應該使用 where 這個關係副詞,在此 where 修飾動詞 used to be,但 where 所引導的整個關係子句 (where my great grandfather used to be a minister) 則是修飾 church。

My favorite month is always February, when we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Do you know the reason why Mary isn’t in class today?

Do you know the reason (that) Mary isn’t in class today?;I know the reason (that) men like motorcycles. I know the reason, why men like motorcycles.

  • This is the mountain village where I stayed last year.
  • This is the mountain village where I visited last year.
  • This is the mountain village (which) I visited last year.
  • I’ll never forget the days when I worked together with you.
  • I’ll never forget the days when I spent in the countryside.
  • I’ll never forget the days (which) I spent in the countryside.

上面的句子 “My favorite month is always February, when we celebrate Valentines’ Day.”

  • This is the museum which the exhibition was held. (誤 — 這句的先行詞 museum 在關係子句中不是當主詞或受詞,而是當副詞用,即 in the museum:The exhibition was held in the museum.)
  • This is the museum where the exhibition was held. (正)
  • This is the museum in which the exhibition was held. (正 — 因為 in the museum 的關係,在此 where = in which)

Partially, partly (advs.)

The stream was partly polluted. The stream was partially polluted.

Partially 意指「不完全地」(not completely; to a limited degree/extent),是 completely 的反義詞,而 partly 意指「僅涉及一部份,並非全部;有幾分」(not wholly; to some degree/extent),是 wholly 的反義詞。 His book, which was written partly in English and partly in French, was only partially completed when he died.

He is partially responsible for the accident. (他對該事故負有部分責任);Her father is partially sighted. (她的父親弱視);The airline is partially owned by British Airways.

  1. Inflation has remained low, partly as a result of cheaper imports.
  2. I’ll admit I was partly to blame.
  3. She was shaking all over, partly because she was so angry with John and partly because she was so afraid.

Continual, continuous (adjs.), continuance, continuation, continuity (nn.)

He still smokes despite the continual warnings of his doctor. (儘管他的醫生多次警告,他還是抽菸);Continual rain ruined the crops. (連續陰雨毀壞了農作物);continual demands for improved working conditions (多次爭取改善工作條件的要求);continual hammering (一下又一下的敲打)。

The brain needs a continuous supply of blood. (大腦需要不斷的血液供給);The trees formed a continuous line on the horizon. (樹木在地平線上連成綿延不斷的線條);a continuous flow of water (汨汨流水);a continuous hum from the air conditioner (空調持續不斷的嗡嗡聲);continuous hammering (連續不斷的敲打);a continuous roll of paper (連在一起的一捲紙)。所以,「不斷的干擾/騷擾」是 continual interruptions/harassment,不是 continuous interruptions/harassment。

I’m tired of the way he continually complains about everything. (我對他老是凡事抱怨感到厭煩);Our database is being continually updated. (我們的資料庫一直在更新);The plane landed after flying continuously for 16 hours. (飛機在連續飛行 16 小時後著陸);It rained continuously for three days.

The continuance of this drought will ruin the harvest. (旱災持續下去會把莊稼毀掉);his continuance in office (他的繼續留任)。 We look forward to a continuation of the talks next week. (我們都盼望下週能繼續會談);Continuation of my work was difficult after I had been ill for six months. 儘管語意有所差異,但在一些上下文中,continuance 和 continuation 是可以互換的,如 the continuance/continuation of the strike (罷工的持續)。 The road is a continuation of the M6 motorway. (這條路是 M6 高速公路的延伸);His second novel is a continuation of the first.

The school was like a second family, providing continuity and stability. (學校就像第二個家庭,提供延續性和穩定性);There’s no continuity between the parts of his book. The continuity girl is responsible for making sure that the actor wears the same hat in both scenes.
