Lawful, legal, legitimate (adjs.)

lawful 意為「依法的;合法的;法律認可的」,是指根據法律而存在的,並含有該法律具有道德和宗教約束力的意思,如 a lawful marriage (合法的婚姻);lawful ownership (合法所有權);I was going about a lawful business.

It is legal for people over 18 to buy alcohol. (18 歲以上的人買酒是合法的);Schooling is a legal requirement for children over five years old in Britain and the U.S. (在英國和美國,五歲以上兒童入學受教育是一項法律規定);The driver’s blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit. 然而,legal 更常被用來表示「與法律有關」的意思:the legal profession (法律專業);Taiwan’s legal system (台灣的法律體系);The company intends to take legal action over this matter. (這家公司打算就此事訴諸法律/採取法律行動);You may wish to seek legal advice before signing the contract.

(他是這筆財產的合法繼承人);Are the premises being used for legitimate business purposes? (這些地產供正當生意目的使用嗎?);Her illness was a legitimate reason for being absent from work. (她生病是沒來上班的正當理由);Did he have a legitimate excuse for being late? (他遲到有正當理由嗎?);He is not the king’s legitimate son.

Political, politic (adjs.)

They have attempted to find a political solution to the problems of the region. (他們一直努力尋求政治解決這個區域的問題);The students in this university are very political. (這所大學的學生對政治非常感興趣);Everything in our company has got a bit political, which makes work very difficult.

When it appeared the decision would be political, we withdrew our support. (當該決定看來好像是基於政治私利時,我們就撤回了我們的支持);The tax cuts were made for purely political reasons/considerations.

Politic 幾乎已與政治無關,現今它只有在 “the body politic” (政治實體;國家) 這個片語中才意為「政治的」,在其他方面它意為「精明的,明智的;深謀遠慮的,考慮周詳的;狡猾的」(shrewd, prudent, thoughtful, cunning):We thought it would be politic to avoid that subject. (我們認為避開那個話題是明智的);It would not be politic for you to pursue the matter further. (再探究這件事對你來說是不智的);He is a politic statesman.

Classic (adj., n.), classical (adj.)

This is a classic example/case of bureaucratic inefficiency. (這是一個官僚主義沒有效率的典型例子);William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a classic novel. (高定的《蒼蠅王》是一部經典小說);That is a (simple) classic suit. (那是一套典雅/素雅的套裝);It wasn’t a classic game, but it was pretty entertaining.

Shakespeare’s plays are among the great classics of English literature. (莎士比亞的戲劇是英國文學中的偉大經典著作);”War and Peace” is a literary classic. (《戰爭與和平》是一部經典文學名著);The goal from John in the 90th minute was a classic.

Classical scientific ideas about light were changed by Einstein. (愛因斯坦改變了科學上有關光的傳統觀念);How do you explain this in terms of classical Marxist theory? (你怎樣用正統的馬克斯學說來解釋這一點呢?);He is proficient at classical Arabic. 至於 classical music (古典音樂),其最狹義的意思是指大約1750至1830年的音樂,但現在則被廣泛用來指所有非供消遣或娛樂的音樂 (serious music),以別於 jazz (爵士樂)、folk music (名俗音樂) 和 popular music (流行音樂):She prefers pop music and jazz to classical music. (她比較喜愛流行音樂和爵士樂,不太喜愛古典音樂);Bach and Mozart are classical composers.

Avenge (v.), revenge (n., v.), vengeance (n.)

He swore to avenge his brother. They avenged his death by burning the village. He resolved to avenge the insult on the boss.

He revenged himself on those who had killed his parents. (他向那些殺害他雙親的人進行報復);Tom wanted to revenge himself on John for his arrogance. avenge 亦可與反身代名詞連用來構成 avenge oneself on somebody (for something) 句型:They avenged themselves on their enemy. (他們向敵人報復);They began to avenge themselves on their neighbors for the years of suppression.

它們皆與 take 和 on 構成 take revenge/vengeance on somebody 句型:He swore to take revenge/vengeance on the people who had killed his sister. (他發誓要報復殺死他姊妹的人);The villagers seemed certain to take revenge/vengeance on the enemy. 然而,在 in revenge for something 這個片語中,revenge 不能用 vengeance 來替換,而在 with a vengeance 這個片語中,vengeance 亦不能用 revenge 來替換。in revenge for 意為「以報… He killed the man in revenge for the murder of his sister. The disease came back with a vengeance.

必須注意的是,get even 係接介系詞 with 再接報復的對象,而 retaliate (不及物動詞) 慣用的句型則是 retaliate against somebody for something。例如:I’d like to get even with the man who attacked my daughter. (我要向侵擾我女兒的那個男人報仇);They have threatened to retaliate against the US for the bombing raid. retaliate 的名詞 retaliation 亦很常見,其後若要接受詞 (報復對象) 也是先接 against;此外,它經常以 in retaliation for something (與 in revenge for 的結構相同) 的型態出現。例如:There is always the risk of possible retaliation against peacekeeping soldiers. (維和部隊總是面臨遭到報復的危險);The car bombings were apparently in retaliation for the arrest of the terrorists.

口語和非正式場合常用的成語 to throw in (or throw up) the sponge 係使用名詞 sponge 的字面意思,亦即「海綿」。 After years of fighting dishonesty in the government he threw in the towel at last and left politics. (他與政府內的不正之風鬥爭多年後,終於承認自己無能為力並退出政界);I hate my work. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the sponge.

Bogof

There are some great bogofs on at the supermarket. There are some great bogof offers in store.

WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get — 所見即所得) 則唸成 WY-SI-WYG 三個音節,不是一個字母一個字母地唸成 W-Y-S-I-W-Y-G。 (= Go away!

TFTPOO (Two for the price of one),意為「買二付一」(買兩個只付一個的價錢)。

Resource, recourse, resort (nn.)

My father is my main resource [recourse, resort] when I’m out of funds. (當我缺錢時,我父親是我的主要資源 [依靠]);Violence was our only resource/recourse/resort.

在 have recourse/resort to (依靠;訴諸於) 和 without recourse/resort to (不靠;不訴諸於) 等片語中,recourse 和 resort 是同義詞,不能用 resource 來代替。 The system allows doctors to have recourse to specialist opinion. (該制度使醫生能夠聽取專家的意見);We hope a settlement can be reached without recourse to legal action. They settled the dispute without recourse to violence. = They settled the dispute without resort to violence. = They settled the dispute without resorting to violence.

然而,在 as a last resort/resource (英式英語亦經常寫成 in the last resort) 中,resort 和 resource 可以互換,但卻不能用 recourse 來代替。as a last resort/resource As a/In the last resort, we could borrow more money from the bank. (作為最後手段,我們可以向銀行再借些錢);The government will impose a state of emergency only as a last resort. There are many summer resorts in the mountains. (山裡有許多避暑勝地);a ski/skiing resort (滑雪勝地);a seaside resort (海濱度假勝地);a health resort (療養地);a resort island/town (度假島/度假城)。

Speciality, specialty (nn.)

The menu changes daily, though the speciality [specialty] is seafood. (菜單每天都變,但招牌菜是海鮮);Her speciality [specialty] is ancient Greek poetry. 然而,speciality 大多用在英式英語中,而 specialty 主要是美式英語用字,所以在 the specialty of the house 等片語或上下文中,大多數美國人都使用 specialty,而英國人則大多使用 speciality;(the) specialty of the house 這個慣用語意為「這家餐廳的招牌菜」,其中 house = restaurant,或許你可以用 specialty/speciality of the restaurant 來表達相同的意思,但這就顯得不夠道地。

Lee’s specialty is pediatrics.

Important (adj.), importantly (adv.), more/most important (adj.), more/most importantly (adv.)

Important 這個形容詞與介系詞連用時,通常接for, in 或 to:Winning the game yesterday was important for the team’s morale. (贏得昨天那場比賽對鼓舞全隊的士氣至關重要);Information and support are important in helping people deal with swine flu. (資訊和支援對幫助人們對抗豬流感是很重要的);Your interest and support are important to your child.

It is important to learn to communicate. (學會溝通很重要);It’s important that he (should) learn to read. (他學會閱讀是很重要的) — 「It + be 動詞 + essential, important, necessary, vital 等形容詞 + that + S (should) V…」 It is important that he be sent there at once. She was the most important of all the contestants.

無論是形容詞 more/most important 還是副詞 more/most importantly 都可當句子副詞 (sentence adverb),且都是標準用法:More [Most] important [importantly], we now have the right answer.

Prove

There is evidence that proves his innocence. My advice proved to be wrong. proved 和 proven 不僅被用作過去分詞,而且亦被用作分詞形容詞,意為「已證明的,被證明的,被證實的」,如 a proved [proven] champion (查證無誤的優勝者);a proved [proven] liar (被證實的說謊者);His guilt is proved [proven].

The jury ruled that the charges were not proven.

最後,試比較 (1) They prove her guilt. 和 (2) They prove her guilty. 第 (1) 句的 her 是所有格,her guilt 是 prove 的受詞,而第 (2) 句的 her 是受格,guilty 是 her 的受詞補語,因為它們中間省略了 to be,其原句為 They prove her to be guilty.。從第 (1) 和第 (2) 句可以得出 prove 兩個常用的片語:to prove someone’s innocence/guilt (證明某人清白/有罪) 和 to prove someone guilty/right/wrong, etc.
