- Judy: John, what do you think about this classroom?
- John: Well, it’s okay. The equipment’s quite good. There’s a computer, and there’s everything you need, really. Having said that, it’s a bit small.
事實上,我們也可以使用 but 來代替 Having said that。 同樣地,however, nonetheless, nevertheless 和 in contrast 也可以擔任同樣的功能。 另外,however, nonetheless, nevertheless 和 in contrast 大多用在寫作或書面中,but 可用於寫作或口語;至於 Having said that,則是用於口語。
Q: lots of, a lot of 和 a lot 這三者之間有何不同呢?
A:a lot of 或 a whole lot of 和 lots of 的意思完全一樣 (意為「大量;許多」= a great quantity, number, or amount of),而用法也幾乎如出一轍,唯一的小差異是 lots of 大多用於口語;換言之,lots of 比 a lot of 要來得非正式。
- There are a (whole) lot of people over there.
- There are lots of people over there.
就文法而言,a lot of 和 lots of 是用在名詞或名詞片語之前,而名詞可以是可數 (countable) 或不可數 (uncountable)。例如:
- There are a lot of people working for the company.
句中的 people 為可數名詞,而 people working for the company 就是名詞片語。 - What a lot of food there is!
- I’ve got a lot (of work) to do.
- They gave us lots to eat.
- This is a lot better.
- That is lots interesting.
- Thanks a lot. (= Thank you very much 非常感謝)
- Are there a lot of people working for the company?
Yes, a lot. 或
Yes, lots.
最後要提的是一個與 a lot of 和 lots of 有關的非常重要的文法觀念,那就是:在否定句和問句中,若名詞為可數,往往使用 many 來代替 a lot of 或 lots of;若名詞為不可數,往往使用 much 來代替 a lot of 或 lots of。例如:
- There aren’t many Spanish tourists in Taiwan.
- Are there many Spanish tourists in Taiwan?
- I haven’t got much money.
- Is there much food in the refrigerator?
a. I haven’t got a lot of money but I’ve got much love.
b. I’ve got much money but I haven’t got a lot of love.
c. I haven’t got much money but I’ve got a lot of love.
答案是:”c.” I haven’t got much money but I’ve got a lot of love.
Q:not a bit 和 not a little 有何不同?
A:a bit 和 a little 的意思幾乎相同,但兩者前面若加上 “not”,意思卻完全不同。not a bit 意為「一點也沒有;一點也不」,而 not a little 意為「很多;非常」。例如:
- Tom wasn’t a bit surprised.
- Tom wasn’t a little surprised.
The shirt looks a bit/a little large. Give me a bit of water. There is a little food in the bowl.
關於 not a little,也可使用 no little 或 quite a little 來表達相同的意思,這三個片語都與 much 同義,亦即 “not a little = no little = quite a little = much” (很多) — 它們都是接不可數名詞。若要接可數名詞,英文也有相對應的片語來表達相同的意思,它們是 “not a few = no few = quite a few = many” (很多)。例如:
He has much money but I have many books.
= He has not a little money, but I have not a few books.
= He has no little money; I have no few books.
= He has quite a little money; I have quite a few books.
= He has a great deal of money but I have a large number of books.
(I’m partially, fairly, somewhat happy but not completely happy),但也可能意為「我十分/非常高興」(I’m totally, entirely, completely, 100% happy)。
當有人說 I am quite happy.
所以,如果我說 I am quite exhausted.
- Mike: Are you feeling better now?
- John: Yes, I’m feeling quite healthy, thank you. In fact, I feel great!
從上面的對話可知,由於 John 說 I feel great!
- Mike: Are you feeling better now?
- John: Well, I’m feeling quite healthy, but I still have a terrible headache.
I still have a terrible headache.
Q:Especially men have this problem.
- Married men and women, especially men, are likely to live longer than those who are not married.
- Men, especially, have this problem.
- Also men have this problem.
- Men also have this problem.
- Also, most women would agree.
= Furthermore, most women would agree.
Q:It’s not that big of a deal.
The day is too hot. 或 It’s too hot a day. It’s a too hot day.;同樣地,「咖啡太甜」可以說成 The coffee is too sweet.,但不能說成 too sweet coffee (例外:只有 too much/little 才可以使用「 too + 形容詞 + 名詞」的結構,如 too much/little money)。
How hard of a job do you think it’ll be? (It’ll be) a hard job. She didn’t give too long of a talk. (She didn’t give) a long talk. 來理解 — to give a talk (on/about) 意為「發表演講;作報告」。
Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage It won’t be that long of a speech.。 A particular stroke wouldn’t be that difficult of a shot.。 I don’t want to be considered too good of a loser.。
It’s not that big of a deal. 可以 It’s not a big deal. What’s the big deal?,後者同樣在表示「那有什麼了不起」或「那又怎麼樣」(So what?)
Q:I would appreciate “it” if you would pay in cash. 和 I would appreciate if you would pay in cash.
這個動詞的主要意思有四:1.「鑑賞,欣賞,賞識」,如 appreciate good wine (欣賞好酒),wine appreciation (葡萄酒賞析);2.「瞭解,明白」(= understand, realize);3.「感激,感謝」(= be grateful or thankful for);4.「(財產、貨幣等) 增值,升值」,如 His house has appreciated considerably during the past six months. Do you appreciate our problem? I appreciate that you are disappointed by our failure to promote you.
另外,當 appreciate 意為「感激」時,亦有人反對其後直接接 how 或 that (但筆者認為應該還要再加上 if) 所引導的子句,如 Garner’s Modern American Usage 一書的作者 Bryan Garner 就是其中之一。 We appreciate how you’ve worked for the community. (我們對您為社區所做的事表示感激) 應改為 We are grateful for …。
「主詞 + would be grateful if 主詞 + would/could…」
- I’d be most grateful if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d much appreciate it if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d be much obliged if you could/would give me an interview.
上句中的「主詞 + would be obliged if…」 I will appreciate it if …
1. A large amount of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu. 2. A large number of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu. 3. A large quantity of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu.
- The amount of work I got through in September was double the amount that I did in August.
- She spent a very large amount of money yesterday.
- A small number of chickens were infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu.
- The president has made a large number of mistakes.
Quantity
- There are very large quantities of oranges on sale in the market.
- A vast/large quantity of imported beer has been sold.
Q:Everyone was tired except John. (除約翰外,大家都累了) 這句為何可以寫成 Everyone except John was tired.,但卻不能寫成 Except John everyone was tired.
- Everyone was tired except John.
- They all went to the public library last Sunday except him.
- Every day Mary does nothing except watch TV.
附帶說明:若句子的主動詞為 do/does/did,則 except 後面一般都是接省略 to 的原形動詞,如上句;若主動詞不是 do/does/did,則 except 通常是接帶 to 的不定詞,如 I had no choice except to obey his order.
- He always goes to work by bike except recently.
- I can take my holidays at any time except in August.
- I know nothing about him except that he lives next door.
- My father usually goes to work by motorbike except when it rains.
1. 在 all, any, every, no, none, anything, anybody, anyone, everything, everybody, everyone, nobody, nothing 等表示泛指的不定代名詞之後,一般都用 except 而不用 except for。例如:
- She ate everything on the plate except the carrots.
- I’ve cleaned all the rooms except the toilet.
- Everyone was tired except John.
- We go to school every day except Sunday.
- Except for one old lady, the bus was empty.
- The road was empty except for a few cars.
Everyone was tired except for John.,但根據第 1 和第 2 項敘述,我們還是寫成 Everyone was tired except John.
3. except for 可置於句首,但 except 卻不行 — 這就是為何 Everyone was tired except John. 不能寫成 Except John everyone was tired. Except for John, everyone was tired.。
- Except for Mike, we are all under 40.
- Mr. Lin is a good man except for his bad temper.
- Your composition is quite excellent except for several spelling mistakes.
5. 僅 except for 有「若非;要不是」(= but for) 的意思,except 並無此義。例如:
- She would have left her husband years ago except for the children.
= She would have left her husband years ago but for the children.
= She would have left her husband years ago if she had not had the children.
= But that she had the children, she would have left her husband years ago.
- Excepting Sundays, the library is open daily.
- Dogs are not allowed in the shop, always excepting blind people’s guide dogs.
- I think we must keep improving our English not excepting those who have mastered it.
- All of us, without excepting those who know more about the subject, should study.
