Q:for ages 和 in ages 的用法一樣嗎?

A:For ages (= for a long time) 和 in ages (= in a long time) 的意思完全一樣,都是「很長時間;很久」,只是前者為英式英語,後者為美式英語,如 I haven’t seen him for/in ages.

  1. I haven’t read a good book in ages.
  2. I haven’t read a good book for ages.
  3. I’ve been reading that book for ages.
  4. I haven’t been reading that book for ages.
  5. That’s the worst book I’ve read in ages.
  6. That’s the worst book I’ve read for ages.
  7. I haven’t read a book in ages.
  8. I have read a book in ages.

英文:sail under false colors (v.)

  • A lot of politicians sail under false colors.
  • That door-to-door sales rep was sailing under false colors and was actually a swindler.

Advert vs. avert

The tragedy could have been averted if Sam had not gone to Mainland China. Randy averted his eyes as she changed her clothes.

Aeroplane vs. airplane

Q:在 10:30 a.m. / A.M. 及 11:00 p.m. / P.M. 中,a.m. 或 A.M. 及 p.m. 或 P.M.

A:從文法觀點來看,a.m.

  1. The store will open at 8:30 a.m. this morning.
  2. The library will close at 10:00 p.m. tonight.

在第 1 句,a.m.

  • The store will open at 8:30 a.m. 或
  • The store will open at 8:30 a.m. today. 或
  • The store will open at 8:30 this morning.
  • The library will close at 10:00 p.m. 或
  • The library will close at 10:00 tonight. 或
  • The library will close at 10:00 this evening.

  • Fifteen per cent of the electorate has yet to make up its mind. Fifteen per cent of the electorate have yet to make up their mind(s).,亦即個別看待每位選民,而不是把 electorate 視為集合名詞。
  • Nearly 40 percent of the Taiwanese respondents were optimistic about the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).

Q:see a movie 和 watch a movie 有何不同呢?

值得注意的是,中文的「去看電影」,最道地和最標準的英文講法是 (美式英語) see a movie 及 go to the movies - 其中 the movies 是「電影院」,即 movie theater, cinema;(英式英語) see a film 及 go to the cinema。例如:

  • Let’s go (and) see a movie tonight.
= Let’s go to the movies tonight.
= Let’s go to the cinema tonight.
  • Have you seen any movies recently?
= Have you seen any films recently?

至於國內不少人使用的 go to see a movie,純屬中式英語,並非標準講法,甚至有文法錯誤之虞,不要再用了,因為 go to 後面要接地點或場所名詞,如 go to the movies, go to the concert (去聽音樂會), go to school (上學), go to church (做禮拜), go to bed (上床睡覺) 等。

A woman aged 50 has given birth to twins. (一名 50 歲婦女產下了一對雙胞胎);They’ve got two children, aged 3 and 7.

A woman age 50 has given birth to twins.;They’ve got two children, ages 3 and 7.;Men ages between 18 and 35 are most at risk from violent crime. Men between 18 and 35 years of age are most at risk from violent crime. 或 Men from 18 to 35 years of age are most at risk from violent crime.。

歲時」的意思則用 “at age/ages” 或 “at the age/ages of” 來表達,如 He died at age 80. (他 80 歲逝世);She entered Parliament at the age of 26. (她 26 歲時成為國會議員);The aim of this study was to explore how prenatal drug exposure (PDE) and caregiving environment relate to cognitive, academic, and behavioral performance at ages 6 and 7. The New Fowler’s Modern English Usage 一書指出,at age/ages 是美式英語的用法,而 at the age/ages of 是英式英語的用法,但從實際的應用情況來看,這項區分似乎矯枉過正了,不必當真。再者,在 at age/ages 或 at the age/ages of 中,視所要表達的意思而定,at 可換成其他介系詞,如 By age 6, a child is able to cut softer foods with a knife and is able to tie his or her own shoes. (小孩子到了 6 歲就能用刀子切比較柔軟的食物且能自己繫鞋帶);Men between the ages of 18 and 35 are most at risk from violent crime.。

歲的」意思外,還意為「年老的」,如 an aged man (老翁);He helped take care of his aged grandfather. After his illness he aged quickly. (他病後老得很快);Since her husband’s death, she has aged considerably.

Did you phone her yet? Have you phoned her yet?

在非正式美式英語中,yet, already, just 和 ever 這幾個過去時間副詞,現今經常與簡單過去式連用,如 The bell just rang. (鈴剛響過);I already saw him. (我看見過他);Did you eat yet? The bell has just rung.;I’ve already seen him.;Have you eaten yet?

  • Did you ever go to mainland China?
  • Have you ever been to mainland China?

Q:”in front of” 和 “in the front of” 的意思有很大的不同。 There is a desk in front of the chair. (椅子的前面有張書桌);There is a desk in the front of the classroom.

1. in future:
in the future:未來,將來

  • Try to do better in future.
  • In future, make sure you go to school on time.
  • What will you do in the future?
  • We’re hoping to move to the United States in the not too distant future.

in the charge of:在…

  • The nurse is in charge of the old men.
  • The old men are in the charge of the nurse.
  • Who’s in charge of the department?

3. in case of:萬一…
in the case of:就…

  • In case of fire, ring the bell.
  • In case of any difficulties, you must consult with your aunt.
  • Many people want to be famous singers and make a lot of money, but in the case of me, it’s otherwise.

4. in hospital:

注意:美式英語也用 in the hospital 來表示 in hospital 的意思 (in university 和 in the university 也有同樣的情況)。

  • His father is in hospital.
  • “Where is John?” “He is in the hospital. He goes there to see his sick friend.” (「
  • I’m a high school student, and I go to school every day.
  • My father sometimes goes to the school to speak to the headmaster.
  • Are they in church?
  • Are they in the church?
  • He is in prison.
  • He is in the prison. He is there to see his brother.
