temp

  • Sam’s a floating temp.

Urban Dictionary (UD) 則直截了當地將其直譯為 “afraid of losing out to other people, afraid to lose out”。

  • I should have gone two hours earlier: the kiasu in me is growing.
  • These parents are so kiasu! School hasn’t started yet for their Primary One children and they’re already buying tons of assessment books.

在公開甄選中,過關叫做 to make the cut、被選中叫做 to be/get selected,而被刷下來、被淘汰叫做 to be/get eliminated。

例句:

  • An estimated 4,500 “Star Wars” fans attended open auditions for next film, which is due out in 2015. Only three of them made the cut to advance to the next round, and the others all got eliminated.
  • “America’s Got Talent” will kick off open auditions for Season 9 on October 26. The audition cities include Miami, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. (《

riff-raff

  • John put a high fence around his house to keep random riff-raff from beating on his doors.

英文:race against time (n. / v.)

  • We were in a race against time to beat the deadline.
  • We had to race against time to finish before the deadline.
  • You don’t need to race against time. Take your time!

Narrative, story, tale (nn.)

The May-December romance was the cover story in that tabloid magazine.

Most people like first-person narrative. (大多數人都喜歡第一人稱敘事技巧);Cindy’s trip to Madagascar made an interesting narrative. (辛蒂的馬達加斯加之旅是個很有趣的故事);My English teacher has been working on different aspects of narrative.

My son likes stories about new technology. (我兒子喜歡有關新科技的故事);Those are true stories about celebrities. (那些都是名流的真實故事);That’s a love story with a happy ending.

(保羅喜歡歷險故事);Mother told us the tales of her childhood. (母親給我們講她童年的故事);Every loser has their tale of woe to tell.

Demur vs. demure

Everyone demurred at the proposal. (每個人都反對這項建議);My parents demurred at my plan of marrying Sarah. The bill was passed without any demur. (該法案毫無異議地通過);Both sides accepted the decision without demurral.

Christine, one of my female colleagues, is a demure young lady. (我的女同事克莉絲汀是個嫻靜的年輕女子);Ellen used to be demure.

英文:your call; whatever; It’s up to you.

(It’s) your call 和 It’s up to you

  • John: Do you wanna get spaghetti or pizza tonight?
    Mary: Your call!
  • Nobody can make this decision for you – it’s your call.
  • A:Do you want me to share this with you?
    B: Whatev! (B:
  • Are you sure you don’t wanna go to the concert with me tonight? Whatev! It’s up to you! Just make the call!!
