  • Todd’s been in a snit all morning.
  • Yvonne’s been in a snit ever since her boyfriend grabbed Olivia’s ass.

By and by vs. by the by

By and by 通常當副詞片語用,意為「不久 (after a while);很快 (soon)」,如 Sam will come back by and by. (山姆不久就會回來);By and by the sun began to appear. Most science fiction stories are set in the by-and-by. (大多數科幻小說都是以未來為背景);Last night I told my wife about my plans for the by-and-by.

By the by 意為「對了;順便一提 (incidentally, by the way)」,如 I have to go now. By the by, if you want that book, I’ll bring it next time. 對了,如果你要那本書,我下次帶給你);By the by I have something to tell you.

Bye and bye, bye the bye, by the bye

英文:on an empty stomach (phr.)

說明:英文中由 stomach 所構成的慣用語不在少數,如 have/get butterflies in one’s stomach (緊張不安;心神不寧) 也是其中之一。

例句:

  • You should avoid drinking alcohol on an empty stomach.
  • Jeff left early this morning and drove three hours on an empty stomach.

Alligator (tears) vs. crocodile (tears)

Tony was only crying crocodile tears at his father’s funeral.

The little girl wasn’t really hurt, but she shed alligator tears anyway.

英文:in the wrong line of business (phr.)

說明:line of business/work 意為「行業」,如 What line of business is your sister in exactly?

  • It appears that I’m in the wrong line of business after seeing what they charge per hour of labor.
  • I think Martha is in the wrong line of business. With her expertise, she should consider a job in law.

Q:What for? 和 For what?

A:What (…) for? 和 For what?

  • John: I’m going to London tomorrow.
    Mary: What for?
  • She’s decided to move to the suburbs.
    For what?
  • What did Jack hit you for?
= For what did Jack hit you?
  • What are you doing this for?
= For what are you doing this?

  • Kevin gave an overcoat to the beggar.

  • Who did Kevin give an overcoat to?

  • To whom did Kevin give an overcoat?

和 “For what?”。

  • Jessica sold her Dragon Year commemorative coin sets for money.

  • What did Jessica sell her Dragon Year commemorative coin sets for?

  • For what did Jessica sell her Dragon Year commemorative coin sets?

然而,在口語中,由於前後問答的關係,類似 did Jessica sell her Dragon Year commemorative coin sets 這樣的問句會被整個省略掉,使得上面那句變成 “What for?”,而下面那句變成 “For what?”,但兩者意思並無不同。

老梗

英文:such a cliché! (phr.)

  • It’s all such a cliché!
  • Not that old chestnut again!
