  • Product placement subtly advertises products in television shows, movies, video games and books.
  • Product placement in films and international programmes (such as US drama series) has been allowed on UK television for many years.

It is true for all that that that that that that that refers to is not the same that that that that refers to.

  • John has unrequited love for a girl in his class.
  • Henry has been tortured by his unrequited love for that married colleague.
  • I love him, but he loves her. One-sided love sure sucks.

  • He lives in a beautiful big red Japanese wooden house.
  • He lives in a beautiful red big Japanese wooden house.
  • He lives in a beautiful big Japanese red wooden house.

Gage vs. gauge vs. gouge

Wendy borrowed my tablet computer and left her diamond necklace as a gage. (溫蒂借了我的平板電腦並留下她的鑽石項鍊當抵押品);The Rock thought it was time that he threw down the gage to Big Show.

There are many different types of fuel/gas/rain gauges. (現有許多不同款式的油表/瓦斯表/雨量計);a small-gauge needle (一根很細的針);a 12-gauge shotgun (一把 12 口徑的霰彈槍);A decent job is one of the gauges of how successful a man is. The ruling party failed to gauge the strength of netizens’ feelings on this issue.

John used a gouge to make a rather deep hole in the surface of his desk. Bill gouged many small patterns in the sand with a tree branch.

slow time

cf. fast time。

  • Mary: The meeting is at 8am.
John: Is that slow time or fast time?
  • I am going to the club. I will be there at 9 o’clock slow time.

英文:mama’s boy, momma’s boy, mummy’s boy (n.)

  • I thought I loved him so much until I realized he was a mama’s boy who can’t do anything without his mother’s permission or approval.
  • Tommy, I received a phone call from Daniel’s parents last night. Please don’t pick on him anymore at work, because he is a momma’s boy.
  • You’re such a mummy’s boy.

Forbidding vs. foreboding

His girlfriend’s three days of silence is a foreboding sign, making Jack feel that something bad will happen. Becky had a grim foreboding that she’d never see her husband again. (貝姬有一種再也見不到她先生的可怕的不祥預感);His girlfriend’s three days of silence filled Jack with foreboding.

His manner is forbidding but actually he is very kind. (他的態度令人生畏,但其實他非常和藹);The Arctic Ocean is a forbidding place for oil drillers. (北冰洋對鑽油業者而言是個險惡的地方) [New York Times];That haunted house is a gloomy and forbidding place.

jammies

  • Time for bed, son. Put on your jammies.
