Q:許多人經常使用的 free of charge 中的 “(of) charge” 是不是贅字?

既然我們可以說 (someone is) free of responsibility (免除責任),free of blame (免受責備),為何不能說某樣東西是 free of charge 呢?

事實上,free 和 free of charge 只是英文表示「免費」的用字或用語中的兩個而已,其他還有 for free, for nothing, gratis, without cost, without charge, without payment。

  • She got her new book for nothing [for free, free, free of charge, gratis, without charge, without cost, without payment].

You may well say so. 另外,may/might (just) as well 和 may/might as well…as 的意思又是為何?

A:may/might well She may/might well refuse to speak to you. (她很可能拒絕跟你說話);You may/might well say so. (= You have good/enough reason to say so.) She may well refuse to speak to you. Well may she refuse to speak to you. Well may you ask why!

再者,你可能會見到 might well + have + P.P. We lost the baseball match, but we might well have won if one of our players hadn’t been hurt. Your mother might well have been looking for you. You may well not recognize him.

may/might (just) as well (= had better/best) You may/might as well not fool around all day long. (= You had better/best not fool around all day long.) (你最好別整天遊手好閒) — NOT 同樣位在 “well” 之後 (意為「最好不」);No one will eat the food; it may/might just as well be thrown away.

may as well A as B 意為「與其 B 不如 A」。
might as well A as B 意為「做 B 等於做 A」。例如:

  • One may as well not know a thing at all as know it imperfectly.
  • We might as well negotiate with a tiger for its hide as try to make peace with the Chinese Communists.

Q: He had to call in sick to work ….

A:我們平常所說的「請病假」,英文最常用的講法是 call in sick 或 take a sick leave。

He called in sick (for one day) to go on a date with his new girlfriend. (他請 (一天) 病假去跟他的新女友約會),有些人往往把 call in sick to work 中的 to work 誤解為不定詞。 這裡的 to 是介系詞,而 work 是名詞 — 這可從學生請病假可以說成 call in sick to school 中得到證明。 He called in sick to work (for one day) to go on a date with his new girlfriend.。

一般而言,「請 (一天) 假沒去上班」就是 take a day off,「請兩天假沒去上班」就是 take two days off,依此類推。同樣地,為了區別上班族與學生的請假,我們可以更明確地說 take a day off from work/school。若是只請半天假的話就說成 take the morning/afternoon off。「早退」是 leave early、「遲到」是 come in late。 He took a day (or the whole day) off to take care of some personal business/affairs.

值得一提的是,美語中有個俚語,意思與 call in sick 完全一樣,那就是 bang in 或 bang in sick (to work),如 I banged in sick to work for two days to finish my book. (我請了兩天病假來完成我的書);Many of our company’s employees banged in today.

Q:at the bank 和 in the bank 以及 on the street 和 in the street 之間有何不同?

  • I will meet him at the supermarket.
  • I will meet him at the checkout in the supermarket.

至於 on the street 和 in the street 之間的區別,一般而言,這要看你從什麼角度來看。 There were a lot of people on the street.。 There were a lot of people in the street.;簡言之,當你使用 in the street 時,你是以「那條街的一份子」或「人在那條街上」的角度來看事情,如 There are speed bumps every fifty meters in the street where I live.

Q:He didn’t come home all the night. 和 He didn’t come home all night.

雖然不少英國人在談話時可能會在否定句中使用 the,如 all the day, all the week 等等,但這是很奇怪的事。

  • He sings all day.
  • He didn’t sing all day.

Our company’s sales have reached an all-time high this year.

Q:”the rise to power of the Chinese Communist Party”

A:非也! 之所以會發生這樣的誤解,是因為您認為 of the Chinese Communist Party 是修飾 power,其實它是修飾 the rise。如果將整個片語改為 “the rise of the Chinese Communist Party to power” (但這樣的寫法被認為是蹩腳、拙劣的英文),意思就清楚了,就是「中共之竄起掌權」。

像 “of the Chinese Communist Party” 這種修飾其前面之名詞的片語 — 即「of + 名詞 (片語)」– 在英文中叫做 「of 所有格」(of-genitive)。 在 English Studies (1986) 一書中,作者 Elizabeth Wieser 稱此結構為 “the splitting of the of-genitive” (of 所有格的分離)。

  • The dubbing into British English of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was a tour de force. (《
  • France’s cooperation with Germany was an example to others of reconciliation and international understanding.
  • There was a glint in his eye of happiness and satisfaction.
  • We fed the dogs with the remnants that had been kept for three days of a feast.

Q:each other、one another 和 both 的所有格為何?

A:在進入正題之前,有必要先對 each other 和 one another 的用法做個說明。

言歸正傳! one another 的所有格比較容易處理,就是在 another 的後面加上 ‘s,變成 one another’s (不是 one anothers’):They held one another’s hands.

The American Heritage Book of English Usage 和 Fowler’s Modern English Usage, each other 的所有格也是在其後加上 ‘s,變成 each other’s (不是 each others’):They had forgotten each other’s names. 然而,在 Modern American Usage 一書中,作者 Bryan Garner 這樣寫道:each other 適當的所有格是 each other’s,但當其後接複數名詞時 (each other 的所有格後面都是接複數名詞),所有格符號 apostrophe 有時會跑到 s 的右邊而變成 each others’;再者,一些著名的文學作品也都是在複數名詞前使用這樣的所有格型態,如 each others’ throats, each others’ hearts。

Both their children are grown-up. (他們的兩個小孩都已成年);Both her parents are doctors.

I gave copies of the book to both their mothers. I gave copies of the book to the mothers of both (of them).,這就變成了「他們兩人的母親」。 It’s both their fault. It’s the fault of both (of them).,語意就清楚了。必須注意的是,英文並沒有 both’s mothers, both’s fault 這樣的所有格寫法。

Q:我們有時會看到 “So be it” 這個用語,請問它是什麼意思?

類似的假設語氣片語或句子還有 “bless you”, “long live”, “be that as it may”, “suffice it to say (that) + 子句” 等等。例如:

  • Bless you. (願上帝保佑您) — 這是 May God bless you.
  • Long live our gracious Queen.
Long live the bride and groom.
  • I have always supported you financially, but be that as it may, I can no longer support your current lifestyle. If I have to pretend that you no longer exist, so be it. — be that as it may 等於 even if that is true, in spite of that (即使真是這樣;儘管如此)。
  • I could mention other examples of your bad work, but suffice it to say (that) your performance has been unsatisfactory.

Q:「做決定」的英文是 take a decision 還是 make a decision 呢?

The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style,take a decision 是英式英語,而 make a decision 是美式英語。雖然 take a decision 於 20 世紀末開始「入侵」美國,但現今美國人仍大多使用 make a decision。

I will quit my job and go work for another company.

I must go buy some soft drinks for my wife. I must go and buy (或 go to buy) some soft drinks for my wife.。

You can come live (= come and live/come to live) with us. (你可以來跟我們一起住);You will come see (= come and see/come to see) us sometimes, won’t you? 。

然而,請注意:與 try and 不同的是,go/come + and 並無過去式或現在式的限制。 He came and saw me yesterday. (他昨天來看我);He went and thanked her last week.
