英文:pass the buck to each other (v.)

  • The authorities concerned have passed the buck to each other after the fatal gas explosions in Kaohsiung.
  • When the boss was asking who had made the mistake, Jim and Tim began to pass the buck to each other.

Device vs. devise

The App supports Android devices running 2.3 or later. (這款 App 支援 2.3 版以上的 Android 裝置);I can give you an effective device for studying English. (我可以告訴你一個有效的英文學習法);Simile is a common literary device.

Mary devised a method/plan for getting promoted to a higher position within a year. (瑪麗想出了一個在一年內晉升到較高職位的辦法);Warren devised a device that can iron clothes automatically.

英文:race against time (n. / v.)

  • We were in a race against time to beat the deadline.
  • We had to race against time to finish before the deadline.
  • You don’t need to race against time. Take your time!

burn rubber

  • Her car was burning rubber down the road at 75 to 80 mph.

  • Jeff turned to Jason and said “Burn rubber, sissy!”

  • Professor Lee has talked tough to all of us.
  • I can talk tough and scare that guy, but I can’t really act tough.

ride shotgun

  • You can ride shotgun.
  • I get shotgun!
  • Shotgun!

Decry vs. descry

The president usually decries the sex and violence of modern films. We descried a herd of cattle in the distance.

英文:sail under false colors (v.)

  • A lot of politicians sail under false colors.
  • That door-to-door sales rep was sailing under false colors and was actually a swindler.
