Kid credentialing

The goal made or missed at eight years old might not matter, but the skills acquired by engaging in competition do matter to elite schools and employers—emphasizing the real connection between the achievement gap and this accepted system of kid credentialing. (The Atlantic, November 13, 2013)

Middle-class parents are understandably anxious to give their kids the best chance possible in life. That’s why they are willing to invest more in “kid credentialling” than ever. That’s why the word “parent” has turned from a noun into a verb. (The Globe and Mail, November 16, 2013)

The new ambassador presented his credentials to the president. (這位新大使向總統呈遞到任國書);當動詞時意為「給予或授予證書」(to grant credentials to; to supply with credentials)。

英文:play the heavy (v.)

  • I’m a nice guy, but at work, I am required to play the heavy. The boss makes me do all the cruel things.
  • My boss doesn’t like to get rid of incompetent staff himself so he asks his secretary to play the heavy and fire them for him.

  • Tony’s been mooching cigarettes off me for years. He’s such a mooch.
  • I can’t believe you are letting Eugene stay here! All he does is eat our food, drink our beer, watch our TV and still has the nerve to ask us if we can loan him money! What a moocher!
  • “You’re not coming over if you’re going to freeload again!”
  • Nelson is the biggest freeloader I’ve ever seen.

Assail vs. assault

While the business community has assailed the tax reform, most of the government officials have come out to support it. (儘管商業界抨擊這項稅改,但大多數政府官員都挺身而出表示支持);Police are searching for a man who used a steel pipe to assault a famous singer. (警方正在搜尋一名用鋼管攻擊一位名歌手的男子);The county magistrate was assaulted by young demonstrators.

英文:pull a few strings (v.); pull some strings (v.)

說明:這成語的基本型態為 to pull strings,但慣用的說法是 to pull a few strings 或 to pull some strings。

例句:

  • Cindy’s father pulled a few strings for her to get a job in that state-owned enterprise.
  • I know more than a few politicians, so if you have any trouble, I can pull some strings for you.

Advert vs. avert

The tragedy could have been averted if Sam had not gone to Mainland China. Randy averted his eyes as she changed her clothes.

Abandon vs. abandonment

The situation necessitated the abandonment of their plan.

The kids were skateboarding with abandon. 當名詞用的 abandon,常見於 with gay abandon, with reckless abandon 和 with wild abandon 等片語中,如 Those teenagers hurled pieces of wood on the fire with gay abandon. (那些少年盡情地把木塊往火上扔);This year holiday shoppers are spending money with reckless/wild abandon.

英文:keep a low profile (v.)

Keep 可以用 maintain 來替換,但 keep a low profile 比 maintain a low profile 常見許多;然而,maintain a high profile (保持高調) 卻比 keep a high profile 來得常見。

例句:

  • Mason’s been keeping a low profile at work ever since his argument with Tony.
  • The local people are not always pleasant to strangers, who are warned to keep a low profile while visiting.

Q:A total of … 和 The total of …

A:A total of 後接複數名詞,而該複數名詞是句子的主詞,換言之,a total of 接複數動詞 (BE 動詞就是 are 或 were),而 the total of 也是接複數名詞,但句子的主詞卻是 the total,而不是該複數名詞,所以 the total of 接單數動詞 (BE 動詞就是 is 或 was)。兩者的語意並無差異且皆可用 in total, in all, all told 等同義的片語來替換。例如:

  • A total of thirty days were spent on the trip.
= The total of thirty days was spent on the trip.
= In total, thirty days were spent on the trip.
= In all, thirty days were spent on the trip.
= All told, thirty days were spent on the trip.

顯然地,a total of 和 the total of 的文法概念與 a number of 和 the number of 如出一轍。

  • A total of 432 people applied for the three jobs.

His earnings from car racing now total over three million dollars. They weren’t hurt in the accident, but the car was totaled. (他們在車禍中沒有受傷,但車子全毀了);Her new car was totalled in the accident.

The total cost of the project came to over three million dollars. (工程總費用超過三百萬元);The event was a total failure. (活動徹底失敗);Why on earth would you let a total stranger into the house?

His three goals give him a grand total of 30 for the season. (他的三次進球使他本賽季的進球總數達到 30 個);The sum total of my knowledge of astrology is not impressive.
