Who, which, that 有無逗點的文法問題

Due to 還是 because of 呢?

當句子的主動詞為 am, is, are, was, were 等 BE 動詞時,我們要用 due to,此時 due to 可以用 caused by 來替換。例如:

  • The serious accident was due to his careless driving.
= The serious accident was caused by his careless driving.
The serious accident was because of his careless driving.
  • Mary’s coming to class late was due to the rain.
= Mary’s coming to class late was caused by the rain.
Mary’s coming to class late was because of the rain.

當句子的主動詞為 BE 動詞以外的其他動詞,即普通動詞時,我們要用 because of,此時 because of 可以用 on account of 或 in view of 來替換。例如:

  • Robert cannot go to work because of sickness.
= Robert cannot go to work on account of sickness.
Robert cannot go to work due to sickness.
  • The prices are rising because of the government’s inability to control inflation.
= The prices are rising in view of the government’s inability to control inflation.
The prices are rising due to the government’s inability to control inflation.

非也!Owing to 的用法跟 because of 完全一樣。例如:

  • Poverty is due to laziness.
Poverty is owing to laziness.
  • Because of the weather, we will cancel anniversary celebrations.
= Owing to the weather, we will cancel anniversary celebrations. (正)

Taller than I 還是 Taller than me 呢?

Tom is taller than me Tom is taller than I 的說法顯得做作。 Tom is taller than I am.。

  • Tom is taller than I am.
  • Tom is taller than I. (正) - 只是比較簡潔。

  • Tom is taller than me.

  • Tom likes John more than me.

  • Tom prefers John to me.

  • Tom likes John more than I like John.

  • Tom likes John more than he likes me.
  • Tom likes John more than I do. 或
  • Tom likes John more than I like John.

然而,當 than 後面接代名詞 who 時,than 必須用作介系詞,所以 who 要變成 whom;簡言之,”than whom” 是唯一正確的版本。例如:

  • Blanche likes you more than who?
  • Blanche likes you more than whom?

Cannot 還是 can not 呢?

情態 (或語氣) 助動詞 (modal or modal auxiliary) can 的否定形式為 cannot,而 cannot 的縮寫為 can’t。反過來說,can’t 的原形是 cannot,不是 can not。

  • You should tell your son what he can and can not do!
  • We cannot be too careful in choosing friends. A man cannot be too careful in the choice of his enemies.

Can not 現在僅被用於強調 not 的句子;問題是,喜歡用 can not (而不是 cannot) 來強調 NOT 的人還不在少數。不過,下句中的 can not 雖是兩個字,但卻是個完全正確、毫無爭議的句子,因為 can not 並非 can’t 的意思,這裡的 not 是 not only … but (also) …

  • Norma can not only sing but play the saxophone too.

You and I or you and me

不少人經常在 you and I 或 my husband and I 等應該用 me 的情況中使用 I,簡單的文法卻犯了大錯,令人遺憾!

  • It is a gift from my husband and me.
  • It is a gift from my husband and I. (誤) - 這跟說 from I 一樣是錯誤的。
  • Between you and I, I think his wife is rather ugly.

Between you and me = between ourselves = between you, me, and the gatepost/bedpost

記住,介系詞 (from, between, by, for, in, at, on …) 這與 I 的前面是否有 you 或 my husband 無關。

只有 you and I 或 my husband and I 在句中當動詞的主詞時,才使用 I。例如:

  • You and I often argue on this subject. (你我經常吵這個話題) (正) - You and I 是動詞 argue 的主詞。
  • My wife and I accept your invitation. (我太太和我接受你的邀請) (正) - My wife and I 是動詞 accept 的主詞。

  • It is a gift from my husband and I/me.

問題:I 或 me 呢?
步驟 1: 把 “my husband and” 拿掉。
3a: It is a gift from I. (誤)
3b: It is a gift from me. (正)

所以:

  • It is a gift from my husband and me. (正)
  • It is a gift from my husband and I. (誤)

All of the + 名詞中的 of 是贅字

在「all of the/these/those/所有格 + 名詞」的句型中,all 是不定代名詞 (indefinite pronoun),如 All of these students live in Taipei. (這些學生全都住在台北);All of his money is spent on food. 由於 of 可以省略,上述句型就變成「all the/these/those/所有格 + 名詞」,此時 all 變成 (前置) 限定詞 (determiner or pre-determiner),如 All these students live in Taipei.;All his money is spent on food.。

  • All my students are female.
All of my students are female.
  • I want to hear all the details.
I want to hear all of the details.

然而,如果將「all of the/these/those/所有格 + 名詞」中的「the/these/those/所有格 + 名詞」換成人稱代名詞的受格 (us, you, them, it),那麼 of 不能省略,否則就犯了大錯。例如:

  1. All of us must attend the meeting.
  2. All of you need to buy me a coffee.
  3. All of them can speak Japanese.
  4. He’d like all of us to get there.
  5. I’ve invited all of them to my birthday party.

  1. We all must attend the meeting.
  2. You all need to buy me a coffee.
  3. They all can speak Japanese.
  4. He’d like us all to get there.
  5. I’ve invited them all to my birthday party.

  • Duke did not find the key neither on nor under his desk.
  • We didn’t have neither money nor food.
  • We had neither money nor food.
  • We didn’t have either money or food.

  • Edward doesn’t know nothing.
  • Stanley doesn’t believe in no God.
  • I haven’t got no money.
  • My wife is not unattractive.

Agenda

  • There is a hidden/secret agenda in the government’s tax break.
  • All the agendas are listed in the e-mail I sent to you.

Criteria

  • Dora’s criteria for selecting her future husband is very simple. He has to be tall, rich, and handsome.
  • Dora’s criterion for selecting her future husband is very simple. He has to be tall, rich, and handsome.
  • Dora’s criteria for selecting her future husband are very simple. He has to be tall, rich, and handsome.

  • What are your criteria for judging the quality of a student’s work?
  • What is your main criterion?

Data

  • My data were corrupted.
  • My data are being collated by three professionals.

  • My data is corrupted. (正)
  • My data is being collated by three professionals.

Media

  • The media have a lot of influence today.
  • The media has a lot of influence today.

No one 還是 no-one?

No one person would take responsibility for bringing Mary home.

  • Doris and Grace moved to USA and UK respectively last year. (正)
  • Doris and Grace moved to U.S.A. and U.K. respectively last year.
  • The program was only shown on NBC not C.B.S.
  • The program was only shown on N.B.C. not CBS.

  • BBC / CNN / NBC
  • a.m. / i.e. / e.g. / p.m. / p.p.
